I decided that the garage sale fine trailer should have some fresh grease in the wheel hubs the other day, so yesterday, when I was in the bike shop buying tubes, I picked up some grease. I might be nuts, but I decided that it would roll faster if I did that.

So last night, while we were sitting around watching TV in the evening, I brought in each wheel in turn, took them apart farther than the instructions I found online said to (and I found those to make sure I was putting them back together right) Then I put in generous blobs of grease, reassembled the wheels and put them back on the trailer. Oh, while at it, I put tire liners in too. We've got lots of goat heads and they don't clean the bike lanes when people leave junk like glass and nails.

I decided today that "this was fun" and I would treat the little Trek hybrid to some new grease too. When I started in on its wheels tonight, during the daily movie, DH was concerned. I was a little concerned too -- the bearings were different in these wheels, since they weren't in a "holder" like in the trailer hubs. They were "loose" -- held in place by the grease, as I told DH.

Now, hopefully I got everything tightened just right, and won't have problems with things falling apart!

HE wondered if the little blue Trek will go faster now. We'll see. HE was NOT the one hauling the groceries up hill!

After you ride on these hubs for a couple weeks, check the cone adjustment again. Sometimes they loosen up a tad (or give the false impression or being tight initially due to excess grease) and need a second adjustment. The best adjustment is with a tiny bit of play off the bike that disappears when you tighten the quick release on the bike.
