I know it's early, but is there any damage??
I'll start checking out the websites.
Is everyone ok?
I felt it -- I'm working at my office in Alviso. It seemed to go on for about a minute, and the light fixtures hanging from the ceiling were doing a pretty good imitation of the two-step.
Took me a second to remember to get away from the window and find a nice doorway to stand under.
Tried to call home to see how the housemates and dogs are, but the line's busy.
Not a lot of info yet:

5.6 -- NNE of Alum Rock Park here in San Jose.
Felt it here in the East Bay, Hayward. I heard before I felt it. It was a long one, not strong but with enough time to identify it as "this is not the neighbors video game", grab the dog, the spare leash by the door and go outside. Neighbors were outside too.
Off to check the Earthquake supplies.
What fault?
5.6? Oh cr*p, cr*p, cr*p.

dumb q but you can hear an equake?
c
Not dumb. It's been a long time since I've been in one and most of the time I was woken from being asleep. There is a sound but it's more of a "everything is shaking" sound. I don't know if you were outside and nothing was there that there would be a sound. There probably would be one.
It's unnerving to hear breaking glass and things falling and just hoping it will END!

Not a dumb q coming from outside of equake-country, but the answer is definitely "Yes!" When the earth moves, it makes noise. When megatons of rock are breaking and shifting against one another and the shockwaves go billowing outwards through what we otherwise think of as solid matter, yes, it makes noise. The ones I've experienced sounded, and felt, like a heavily loaded but short freight train, or an 18-wheeler, rumbling by.
5.6 is considered moderate, but "moderate" starts in the mid-3's and the scale is logarithmic, so 5.6 is getting up there in the vicinity of "big".
Half-marathon over. Sabbatical year over. It's back to "sacking shirt and oat cakes" as they say here.
