Annie, Penny, and all you other little sewers out there....

I just paid well over $500 smacks to outfit myself, my son, and my hubby for this summer and winter cycling clothes...(16 year old daughter does "not share all of our enthusiasm for the bike...
her words not mine!) SO, I have decided that this fall when it gets to cold to ride anymore and I have cleaned and stripped my beloved TREK...aka Thin Lizzy...I am going to go and take up sewing!!!! I have had my nose in the phone book all day trying to find places that teach Sewing for Dummies...I never learned as a kid. My Mom's a knitter and as a kid I was such a bad asthmatic that they hid all the yarn from me...(however they all kept smoking in front of me!) SO, I am going to take the bike by the deralluries and get myself to a point where I can sew all the neat stuff like you all do! LADIES YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME

To be honest, $500 for summer and winter clothing for three people sounds like a bargain to me ... but I'm a spoiled DINK.

( who just finished some really awesome zipoff hiking pants for a 6'4" client with a 36" indseam... these things are bombproof, and made out a great weight nylon, not that paper thin stuff..... oops, sorry for the shameless self promotion....)

giving back is really fun. In addition to my tips site, I moderate a gear maker's board over at www.backpacking.net It's the ultralight hikers... and they make all sorts off stuff: tarps, packs sleeping bags, stoves.... You have to love a thread titled "pepsi can stove go boom". I have had some really wonderful mentors over the years, and even now, with my site, I have have some very cool industry people drop into my world. So.... like I said, when you are ready to tackle a project and get stumped, just wave me down from trail.

Wow, I am honored to even be mentioned in the same sentence as "sewing" and "Penny"!! Seriously, I don't do anything like she does, and after visiting her website, I am even more impressed. And inspired to keep trying. We all have to start somewhere. I'm enjoying what I'm doing and if I continue, will hopefully improve. I have two wrap skirts done now! It rained all day today, so I had some riding time to fill in and decided to sew instead. I also checked out numerous websites that carry fabrics. Once I decide what to attempt next, I may be ordering some. Thanks for the help, Irulan!!!

instead if "Sewing for Dummies" check out the Singer Series. I think the basics book is called Sewing Essentials. They have a good one on activewear which covers simple lycra garments and things like how to put a zipper in a shell jacket. Most libraries carry the series. They have really good clear instructions with great photos.
