Tendinitis. How long does it last?

After 2 weeks of hurting I finally went to the doctor, had xrays on my ankle and he said I had tendinitis. I've been on 600 mg ibuprofen 3 X a day. He said if it was not better in two weeks to come back. It's been 2 weeks. At times it seems a little bit better, but maybe it's not. It's going on 5 weeks now.

Has anyone ever had tendinitis in their ankle? Any ideas how long this may last?

How long tendinitis can last weeks to months depending on level of aggravation. But the longer it lasts the more you worry about if the problem might actually be more of a tendonosis than a tendinitis. I wouldn't get worked up about that until you've given it a good 6 weeks of solid rest. That's pretty tough with an ankle unless you learn to walk on your hands.

Sending happy healing vibes your way.

Sandra, I have a couple of bouts of tendonitis in my ankle. Rest, stretching and ice plus several trips to the chiropractor worked wonders. Hope you get some relief soon, very soon.

Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendon. Tendonosis is a more chronic condition related to actual changes in the quality and organization of the tendon tissue itself. It does not heal easily with conservative treatment and is often the true diagnosis when someone has a tendinitis that has lasted for greater than 6 months. They can be treated with surgery to clean up the nasty bits of tendon tissue. There are advances being made in using injections to stimulate the healing process.

I had tendonitis in a shoulder, and my family practice doctor sent me to a physical therapist for exercises and stretching. It helped LOTS! Maybe go talk to your doctor, and see what s/he says now?
