I went to Southern Utah to visit my mom for her birthday last weekend. I was quite entertained to come across this sign:
I asked about it and found out that this was during the war, when there weren't enough men available to be on the dept. They fought some big fires and had great success. There's still one lady left to tell about it.
Thought you might enjoy seeing it, too.![]()
If you can read this, take a pull.

The most effective way to do it, is to do it.

I wonder if it inspires any of the hometown girls....
hey what does it mean: if you can read this take a pull?
This is usually printed in small text on the back of someone's bike jersey or shorts. The person in back who is close enough to read this is drafting off of the person wearing the item. Taking a pull refers to leading the paceline for a while to allow others to draft behind you.
The person in front must work harder than the people drafting behind, so it is customary to take turns pulling. Unfortunately, some people just latch on behind you and refuse to take a turn and lead for a while. This kind of wheelsucking is generally considered rude.
Interesting sign....but is it "All Women" or "All Woman" Fire Department.
We would say "All Man" not "All Men", or "All Female"...not "All Females"
Given that those of us from Alabama are often criticized for our speaking...I finally had my first chance to challenge Southwest grammer!![]()

Mr Silver,
All Woman sounds like the correct usage to me too... "All Women" makes me think that all of the women in the town must be in the Fire Dept.
That said, cool sign! Is the dept. still all-female or was it just so during the war?

as it was during WWII, I think the proper term is "all-dame!"![]()
One night SGTiger and I were sitting out in her parents backyard eating (and in my case, drinking beer) while the kids were playing. My son was up to something he probably shouldn't have been and without thinking, I yelled "Boy, knock that off or you'll bust your damn head."
Complete with just a touch of accent. I don't normally have one, which is why I needed to mention the beer.
