Funny, he's my favorite, too.;)
He had a tough life his first few years, and now he's spoiled and gets into trouble, even though he's really getting up there in years. Most owners would restrict him for his own good, and I should but he has so much fun I just can't. I keep looking at my avatar, when he was ~2 and my gray old man now. :o
I need to video him, his grunts and vocalizations are a riot, he takes so much effort to move around on those stubby legs that vocalizing seems to help. And jumping down from a chair? Like a brick falling, and then a big 'ole grunt on top of that. I have a male friend who laughs everytime Murphy moves.

Murphy is cold all the time, but with his big body and thick neck, I've never found anything that he can wear without tripping over it. I've tried lots of things, though.

Murphy sounds like a typical Murphy---short legs, thick neck, determined (stubborn?) nature! ;)

That picture of him with the quills in his nose still makes me cringe!!

Give him a kiss from a fellow Murph!

Have you tried any Ruffwear (http://www.ruffwear.com/dog_coats;jsessionid=0a010c451f43c9f77db1ce2441c5aa8f9829db515136.e3eTaxeKbh0Te34Pa38Ta38Lbhz0) products? A few of their coat designs do not involve sleeves that could get in the way of short legs. This company is a small business that offers excellent customer service. They sent me free Bark N Boots when one of the boots wore prematurely.

Also, another suggestion is to get an infant size tee shirt or sweater and cut the sleeves off if it's too long for Murphy.

Last comment on him, I talk about him too much....
Prior to Murphy I named him "Sargeant Shorty", but my mom said that was offensive and she'd be angry with me if I called him that. Then he was Napoleon for awhile, but friends started calling him Nappy and that makes me think of the British term for a diaper. Then he was named....
When I finally settled on Murphy, my mom asked "How can you name a German dog Murphy?!"
Murphy was the first of his many names that he clearly answered to. He used to sit and growl at humans on the TV, but he watched an entire Ellen DeGeneres stand up routine on HBO with fascination and no growls, sitting nicely and staring at her. At the end of the show, a picture of a dog was put up with a note with dates and 'dedicated to the memory of Murphy' - so I figured Murphy was his name.

I have several Ruff Wear products, great company, great line. thanks for the tip, though.

Despite the fact that it's a tight squeeze, he always seems to find a way to squish himself in to all my bike stuff. I tell myself that he's "guarding" it. All that bike-guarding is very tiring. :D

We adopted Abby yesterday. She's a 2-year-old American Eskimo dog who had been siezed from a puppy mill. She was one of the moms and she hadn't gotten much attention or training, so she's needing lots of TLC now. She's a real sweetheart, though. Leia, our 13-year-old Siberian Husky, passed away last summer and we really missed her, so we're ready for Abby - and we already love her to bits!

What would you do if your new neighbor has a cocker spaniel that obviously needs to be groomed? This dog is a ball of mats, and has not been groomed in a long time. It's old, too. I've never met the neighbor--they've only lived there a few months. I'm trying to decide whether to call animal control or go knock on the door. :(

Since they're new in town, or at least to the neighborhood, maybe take a plate of cookies over and tell them you know of a good dog groomer and give them a note with the name, address, and number. Not very subtle, but they'd know that the dog's condition was being noticed.

Grooming is expensive, and some people don't have the money for it. But then they shouldn't have a dog that requires grooming, or they should learn to do it themselves...

I thought about offering to do it myself. I have clippers and a place to do it. But what if the old dog is mean or something? I haven't "met" the dog, yet, because it's been so cold. They have a Chihuahua, too. The dogs stay in most of the time, but when it's time to go out they just let both dogs out the front door...there is no fence. I really hate that. My dogs go and greet the cocker through the fence but it's not like they're buds. The Chi doesn't come near the fence. I should probably take a picture of the dog and bring it in.

They know me by name at animal control. I'm not sure how much calling I should do (I call about and pick up strays a lot). :::conflicted:::

Maybe the plate of cookies, groomers referral, will allow you to chat. At which point, find if they can or can't afford grooming, and then you could offer, just this once.

I'm finding on my dog (Aussie shepard mix) I have to watch for mats behind her ears, and now my old long haired cat is getting mats. I tell Bonnie that she letting herself go, and she used to be such a beautiful cat. Bonnie just meows. She's become a "patches" where I've cut the mats out.

this is quite sad, but a couple of weeks ago when I was at the spca hospital doing my volunteering, the vet tech was shaving a very badly matted himalayan. She was so matted that they literally shaved her fur off like an orange peel. They kept the fur and weighed it: it was over a pound! The poor thing must have been so happy to finally be able to breathe through her skin.

I once saw this when I was applying for a vet asst. job. I don't know how someone could let a pet get in such a condition let alone have the nerve to take them to the vet. I would be so ashamed.

I have a mini zoo going on at my house, so bear with me as I post their pictures!

The first picture is of my oldest cat Shiva, she is almost 6 years old and a purebred Snow Bengal that we got at a shelter.

The second picture is my 2nd oldest kitty whose name is Brahma, he's almost 5 years old and a purebred Bengal.

The third picture is my youngest kitty, his name is Colbert (he's the black one, and that's Brahma off to the side), he'll be 4 years old on my birthday (we got him from a shelter, he was born sometime in May, but we didn't know the exact date, so we gave him my birthday!).

The last picture is of my dog Megatron with his brother. Megatron is the one on the right (we don't own his brother). He's almost 10 months old and a purebred Great Dane, He's 3 feet tall at the shoulder and 120 pounds currently with a little over a year more of growth to do.

I've really enjoyed looking at all of your guys' pets, keep 'em coming!

ooh! my dream one day is to have a property large enough to have a hobby farm and first on the list would be a goat (or two!)

do you milk them, or do you keep them as pets? I've read a little bit on the amazing benefits of goat's milk but apparently it has to be raw, as in unpasteurized. I doubt I'll be able to find anything unpasteurized here. And I honestly can't stand the taste of goat's milk *sigh*

GLC1968
03-04-2010, 12:34 PM
Oh, we milk them. Well, we milked our Alpine doe, these two have not yet been bred for the season. Our goal is to time the birth of goat babies to be end of August, so we will be breeding Skylark at the end of March. We will have fresh milk for our consumption about two weeks after that. Pepper will get bred about the time that Skylark births so that we can enjoy fresh milk year round.

Yes, raw milk is wonderful. And raw goat milk is delicious as long as it's fresh and processed correctly. When it ages, it gets 'goaty' and I agree...that is some nasty stuff! ;) When it's fresh, it tastes pretty much the same as cow's milk. In fact, it tastes better and to be honest, I'm not really a milk drinker and yet, I will drink this. Goat's milk can also taste 'goaty' when fresh if there is a buck in close residence or if super clean procedures were not used in processing.

Alpine's have a milk that is about 2.5 - 3% butterfat. Nigerian Dwarfs have a much higher butterfat content that can be as high as 7%!! (for comparison, whole cow's milk is 4%). We will be making cheese, butter, icecream and of course, milk (that has been skimmed - I can't drink 'thick' milk ;)). Plus, I can't wait to have babies on the farm again!

badger
03-04-2010, 02:13 PM
talk about ignorant, here I'm thinking you can milk a goat without her being pregnant :p How long will they milk for? And how do you process the raw milk for consumption? Is there a site or a book that will answer all my questions? ;)

They usually stay in milk until it's time to kid again and then you'd want to give them a couple of months off before birth to build up their strength. The Nigerian Dwarfs will give milk almost all year if you don't dry them off for kidding (or so we've been told).

Actually, there is a great site for goat info - www.fiascofarm.com (http://www.fiascofarm.com/) We learned a lot from Molly and a lot from both trial and error and from frantic google searches in the middle of the night. ;)

The book Natural Goat Care (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Goat-Care-Pat-Coleby/dp/0911311661/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267751677&sr=8-1) by Pat Coleby is also highly recommended. We have it and have read it - great stuff.

I haven't met him yet, but I'm fostering for a pit bull rescue so he's at the very least a pit bull cross. His personality sounds very much like the dog I used to have (a big goofball who loves everyone and everything he meets) :D

I'm not really sure what his prognosis is. He got his one hip done, and in a couple of years he'll likely need to get his other hip done. I'd imagine he'll be on glucosamine and chondritin and anything else (hyaluronic acid, maybe?) to help his other joints.

Funny raw milk has come up as I've just started drinking it myself. Cow's milk, though. I'm not a milk drinker, but I definitely prefer the taste of raw. In that it doesn't have that milk taste. That twangy taste that leaves an aftertaste and makes me plegmy:rolleyes: My dad was all freaked out because it's "not safe". Yeah, that's why people have been drinking it for centuries.

Anyway, I just wanted to show that the Devil Cat can in fact be sweet when she wants to. I was taking some time on a Saturday morning just lazing in bed and she decided it was time to jump on my back.

Aw, Devil Cat is doing a great impersonation of Angel Cat!

Reminds me of the two cats I met at a farm cafe last weekend. Black cat up on the bench was very friendly and happy to be stroked. After quite a while I noticed a timid grey one hiding under the bench, but after a lot of careful persuasion grey cat let himself be stroked too, and even started reaching for my hand. Until he got so bold that his head stuck out from under the bench, then black cat went all mean, jumped over and thwacked him. Poor grey cat went right into a timid huddle again. I thwacked black cat (gently) back and he flew off looking very disgruntled.

I've probably made a royal mess of their their alpha cat/underling rank

Okay, this guy is technically not OUR pet, but we found him flying around our house Saturday night. A pie plate full of bird seed and a lot of patience got the bird coaxed out of a tree and ultimately into our house. An email to our neighborhood's listserv quickly identified the owners who had spent the day frantically searching the neighborhood for their escaped pet, named Picard. We were significantly farther away from their house than they had anticipated he would have wandered.

I am considering moving when my lease is up in November...I can have a cat if I don't have carpet. It is the double-whammy that is the problem with my allergies. So if I can find a place that has more bike storage, no carpet, where I can ride somewhere without having to drive my bike there, AND save a little on rent (oh, and I can't leave the county since I work for the City) then I will move.

Guess I am not asking much, am I  Oh well, but it would be great to be able to have a cat again...

:D Finally.

Say hello to our most gracious reigning queen, who hasn't deigned to tell us her name yet. She's about 2 years old, and has spent about a month at the shelter. She was found running between cars and trams in "Thereses gate" and was nicknamed "Mother Teresa". Which is probably not going to stick. She's confident, social, a headbutter :) and talks to us when she's lonely or bored. Her favourite pose is sprawled out using the maximum amount of space at the least opportune spot. She's extremely friendly, and will start purring and kneading her paws at the drop of a hat, but she's not excessively needy or neurotic. She's also very active, lithe and playful with lovely glossy fur, so she was probably treated very well wherever she came from.

We're in lurrrrve.

And on a sadder note, I am so thankful to have a cat right now. I had a huge "breakup" with a friend who basically unjustly accused me of lying, so I'm feeling pretty heartsore right now. A purring cat calms the soul like nothing else.

And here she is:

Hubby saw him on Petfinder and fell in love with him. His hearing is almost gone and he has vision loss in one eye but to us that makes him even more special. He just had a cancerous tumor removed and is doing very well. From the very start he fit right in with Niki and Kali and it was as though he had always been a part of our family. Way to go Sundial. I volunteer at an animal sanctuary in town that houses primarily older, discarded dogs, and helps educate people how to take care of (and not throw away) their dogs when they get older and develop "needs," as they are usually considered "unadoptable" and instantly put down if/when they end up at the pound or shelter....but often still have plenty of years of life and love in them, and can teach us a lot.
Thanks for rescuing that guy...he's gorgeous!

Seniors are the BEST! They fit like your favorite pair of jeans and they often are mellower, easy going, and just plain relieved to be in a good home. This morning when I was cleaning litterboxes, Calypso the cat was doing the ususal morning crazies, but then I notice that she was actually chasing something.
In the water dish was a gecko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_house_gecko) staring back at me. Took the whole thing outside telling it I would keep it safe from big furry monsters, and poured the contents out. Not quite sure how little gecko got in, as Calypso does have a habit of bringing in her interactive toys and then loosing them. At least this one was released alive.

Good thing I'm not squeamish. I save lizards almost every other day from her. Heeere lizard lizard lizard.... :p:D

That's so funny! Although I'm sure you didn't think it was too funny when you were getting blamed for it:p

Anything new goes straight to the water bowl. Certain things end up in there repeatedly. It's very frustrating. And then there are the days she knocks the bowl around, spilling water everywhere. I looked up drowning toys and one theory is that their feeding area is "their" domain, a special place, and so they take things to their safe place. Or that they enjoy the smell or texture of a wet object. My only conclusion is that cats are insane.

Ah, the joys of having a bloodthirsty predator in the house again. Friday evening I watched Lyra hunt her first mouse, a tiny little shrew. She sat avidly watching the one end of the hedgerow in our back garden, while I could see a tiny grey shadow sneaking down on tiny little feet down towards the other end, until wham! she saw it too and came flying down. Lots of hysterical squeaking. She was in no hurry to kill the poor thing, though, so the shrew got to run hysterically up and down quite a few times... Thankfully she did get to the point after a while, and brought the shrew out, almost dead. I couldn't stand it any more then and thunked a rock on its head. She then grabbed the little corpse and brought it proudly inside, through the entire house and down the stairs, to play with it inside our closet, promptly "losing" it under the low bottom shelf. "Oops, looky, mom, I can't get hold of it!" Yay. Cat and mouse out the front door. In again through the cat flap in back 2 minutes later, this time to play on the living room carpet. New tactic - lots of praise, a reward of goats cheese, mouse spirited away meanwhile and thrown under the hedgerow in front. (I wasn't entirely certain it was dead, so I wanted to give it a sporting chance just in case.)

Next morning - she's been round the entire row of houses, sniffed her way through the hedges and found the bedraggled little corpse again. More praise, more goats cheese, mouse in the garbage this time.

So Sunday we come home to a RAT on the carpet. I can't wait to see what Shere Khan here comes home with next week... But I'll sure be checking under the bed and the low bottom shelf regularly from now on.

years ago I took a still alive bird from my cat as he dragged it into the house and down the stairs. At the time we were living in a European row house, it was summer so most of the doors to the second floor balconies on the back and the attic balconies in the front were open because of the heat. The next day the cat came in proudly dragging a leather mule style slipper with a rabbit fur ball on its' toe. I took that away from him and he went off in a huff. For the next couple of weeks, he would show up with random items, mostly soft and or furry. Socks, scarves, the slipper repeatedly, stuffed toys, balls of knitting yarn, soft towels etc. It got to the point wher I would collect everything into a basket and go from neighbor to neighbor, allowing them to reclaim their "borrowed" items. Several times it became apparent that he was going further afield than just our row of 6 houses because about half of the items were unclaimed!

Finally we got a cold spell and the balcony and attic doors were closed so his crime wave ended. Fortunately my neighbors were very understanding. The teenage daughter who owned the slippers even offered to buy him his own pair, but I managed to convince her that if she would just lock up her slippers that would help.

Several years later when we were getting ready to move, I found another whole pile of uncliamed stuff under a cupboard.

Several of my former neighbors continued to inquire after the"kleptomaniac" cat until he died.

Back when I lived in the mountains of Arizona, Bonnie Cat caught a Ruphus Hummingbird, and comes trotting inside with said birdie in her mouth, meowing proudly through it. I took the tiny bird from her, and amazingly it was alive and apparently unharmed. So I took it next door to my neighbors, who had hummingbird feeders, to try to get it to drink. Also blew warm air onto it while gently holding it. After a few minutes I could feel rustling, a bit more drinking, and more vigerous rustling, I opened my hands, and the little bird burst out, chittering away. If a bird could cuss it did. And the rest of the summer, when Bonnie was outside, she was dive-bombed by a Ruphus hummer (they're known to be fearless and quite territorial)!

And if you're wondering how she was able to catch the little bird in the first place..
Up in the mountains, when we'd get thunderstorms, the temperature would drop 15 or more degrees in less than 1/2 an hour. The sudden drop would put hummers in torpor, slowing them down, or even making them fall. Often they'll perch in a tree or shrub and wait it out, letting their bodies catch up.

Had to post this picture from my commute today. I am in the process of replacing my SPD-SLs with Frogs by way of platforms for commuting and a cycling tour in Italy this fall.

I got a trailer to tow my dog to work in so that she can commute with me. The pedals only relate to the trailer in that when towing 70 lbs of dog + 20 lbs of trailer uphill or into the wind, you really wish you had clipless pedals. ;)

Ditto on the trailer question.

I'm thinking about getting the Doggyride Mini for our 25 lb. American Eskimo. From the dimensions, I think she'll fit but I'm not quite sure. I've read lots of good reviews on it.

How do you like your trailer? Looks like your dog's having a blast!

It's the DoggyRide Novel. I got the Novel rather than the Classic (or whatever the other one is called) for the additional features and weight capacity (so I could carry other stuff on the roof rack if I needed to). She can lie down in it and sleep in her curled up doggie position - looks pretty content when not moving ;). The trailer itself is well built, super easy to assemble (one crossbar to pop in, though stubborn because you have to stretch the fabric a bit), and the wheels go on and off easily (push a button and pull/push, they come off/go on). It doesn't lie flat when you take the wheels off with bike attachment on, so we put a book under one side to keep it flat and stable without having to take the hitch attachment off when we're at work. To attach the hitch piece to the bike, you just pop out your skewer, put the hitch on, put the skewer back through, close the quick release, and it's pretty secure. The hitch mount on the trailer attaches to the bike via a secure pin and a backup cable. It moves very nicely. Until you go uphill. Then it moves nicely but feels like dead weight. ;) You're not supposed to go over 15mph in it, and it definitely feels less stable at 17-18 (going downhill anyway, I am hard pressed to pedal at a consistent 15+mph depending on conditions even when it's flat and maintain a "forever" heart rate). The trailer is flat and a little slippery on bottom, so you'll want a dog bed or the mat to go inside of it and make it more comfy.

It's been a learning experience adapting the dog to the trailer. :) At first, it was mega stress and anxiety. Even hooking her in to the leash attachment and closing it up, she'd try to jump out, stress pant, the whole nine yards - thankfully not to any serious extreme. We did one ride in it to teach her that it goes from home to work and work to home, which she figured out after just that one ride with her smell-o-vision, but wasn't a fan of going over bumps and being closed in, it was stressful. We've done about 5 rides so far, each one getting progressively easier. We had 2 weeks of rain inbetween our first 2-3 rides where I just let her sleep in the trailer and put her smelly old dog bed in it instead of the new memory foam mat. That helped a lot. Then I had her sleep on the memory foam mat in place of her dog bed at work, and now it's a smelly memory foam mat inside the trailer. ;) Eating in the trailer, letting her go THROUGH the trailer, having her sit for a minute, all helped along the way. 1 bag of lean treats later, we have a trailer-compatible dog.

Also, she really struggled with getting into it with the wheels on and it moving as she stepped in (she does weigh 70 lbs, and the kickstand helps but not enough), so we put books behind the wheels to keep it from moving as she gets in, kind of like blocks. The trailer kickstand doesn't reach the ground when it's attached to my bike, but is nice if you are in the process of disassembling. She is well behaved enough to sit and wait while you detach.

Today was her first actual ride being able to stick her head out of the sunroof - my husband rode with us and kept an eye on her. She did awesome and definitely enjoyed it more than being closed in. She took in a lot of information with her nose and did some woofing at surprised passers-by. ;) A tiny bit of whining on the way out/back, but she got into the trailer without any stress, she sat down, she let me roll her through the office to the bike, and she rode most of the way without scratching or anything to "ask" to run (or just be let out) instead of ride. I want to get to the point where I can let her out of the trailer, she can run for a while on protected areas or at the dog park, then she gets back in and we continue our ride through streets and crowded terrain.

I ordered a package deal from Canine Commuter that included the trailer w/bike attachment, the roof rack, the leash (we just attach one side so she can move around easier), and the mat. They ship from the factory, which is in Western WA. I'm glad I got the leash though a regular short leash would probably work fine (there are hooks on top and on bottom in the trailer), I have yet to put on the roof rack, and I think a dog bed would serve the same purpose as the mat to her (or get some foam at the craft store and sew a cover on to it, but I am lazy).

I looked at the Burley Tail Wagon, which she would barely fit in but not be able to carry cargo, and then spotted the DoggyRide reviews. I compared it to one or two other brands, but decided to just go with this one. It is very nice. If I could have found one on eBay/Craigslist, I would have snapped it up again in a heartbeat. It's expensive, but being able to bring my dog to work even in the heat, take her places as she gets older and is unable to run as far, and smell new smells, is pretty awesome.

Here's a picture of her on her dog bed for size reference, the interior of the Novel is basically 1-2" shorter on all sides than this bed - the dog bed curled up a bit when stuffed inside. I think a Golden or Shepherd would have a little less room to maneuver, but still be comfortable in this size.

The hook hanging off the side of the trailer in the first pic is a leash on a bungie, he asks out of the trailer when he wants to walk, and back in when he's tired. I only do this on the trike, since he walks about 6 mph and I can't go that slow on a bike without falling over.

Thanks for all the info and pictures - very helpful! Abby is crate trained but she gets car sick, so I'm anticipating some adjusting time for her to ride in a trailer. We just adopted her in February and she'd been a puppy mill dog (she'd been seized after the breeder had failed 6 of 8 inspections), so she's had lots of new experiences in the last few months. And she does seem to be getting used to the car - gradually.

We're supposed to be getting a new dog park about 2 miles from home. Abby likes to run/walk 2-3 miles, so a trailer sounds like a good way to get her to and from so she can enjoy some good play time. Then we could take her on longer rides as well - more bike trails and parks within a few miles.

My dog Zeke LOVED the trailer when I took him on the Katy Trail. I never even considered getting him used to it, because he's such a good car rider. He "got it" immediately. Letting him run with me (the trail is deserted on a 100* week day in August) was the most fun ever. When he got tired, he'd ask to get back in the trailer. Awesome.

(I used a baby trailer, by the way.)

Now that I have a second dog who weighs twice what Zeke does, I don't think I'll be towing any dogs any time soon.

Murphy took to the trailer right away, loved it. He hangs out in the trailer like he's entitled.
Finn on the other hand.. as soon as it starts moving there is complete and total panic. If you want to train a dog to a trailer, I recommend feeding them in it in your house for a week or two, then gently rock it with them in it... then try it on the bike.

I had wished to get a little wagon or something to take my dog in when he was having a hard time walking, but I know he would've jumped off as soon as it started moving and hurt himself. Next dog (if/when I ever get one!) I'm going to train to ride the cart or if it's small enough to be in a crate strapped to the back.

Lyra is on vacation together with ds and my in-laws at in-laws' cabin in the mountains, and she's having the time of her life. Six mice in the course of the first evening, fourteen in the course of the first two days

I'm thankful she's not much of a bird hunter and is sticking to mice, and according to the biologists I work with there are mice and rats enough to go around for all the predators around here.

But I did a little search just for the heck of it because I'm really bored at work, and look what I found - the CatBib! Looks bizarre, but they say it works.

I admit, I haven't had a cat in many years, but I don't recall my cats ever needing a bib. What's the deal?

I have a couple of messy golden retrievers who could use bibs after drinking water.

lph
07-06-2010, 06:30 AM
The deal is apparently that apart from amusing you and all your neighbours, and putting you in severe danger of your cat never talking to you again, it stops cats from catching birds. Partly because it's large and bright and warns them off, partly because it gets in the way of their final pounce.

I wouldn't have believed it if somebody told me, but there are in fact pictures of 200 (200!!) cats blithely wearing the thing on there.

Selkie
07-06-2010, 07:45 AM
LOL!!! That's what I get for not looking closer at your link! Who'dve thunk it? Why not just put a bell on the cat's collar? Seems like the ultimate indignity, making kitty wear a device like that. Goes against kitty's natural instincts, too. What if a mean kitty, not wearing a bib, comes after a kitty handicapped by the bib?

Juneau and Tiva were great bike dogs--they could happily lope along beside us on quiet limestone bike trails for 20 to 25 miles if the day wasn't too hot. We live along one of these rail-to-trail conversions, and going for a bike ride was their favorite game. Vanya is young and full of energy, so he has a ski-jor harness and line and sometimes he pulls me on my scooter or hybrid bike. When we see a deer or bear, it gets exciting!

Hooray! I got mine at Canine Commuter, too, they were good to work with. I love the green! I was too impatient to wait for green, which is what I originally ordered.

Sounds familiar. Boots is doing MUCH better after a few more weeks/rides in the trailer. Getting in is less of a struggle (but still requires a treat), but once she's in she just lies down. Sometimes I have to stop and untangle her so she can poke her head out. My husband and I rode together for 2 or 3 rides and got her used to being snapped in but poking her head out. The last 2 or 3 rides I've done by myself with her and she's done great. Our major accomplishment this week was NO WHINING, no scratching, and no crazy barking as we went by people (you know, "help, help, she's keeping me hostage!"). She was so much calmer when we got done with our ride, no frenetic running around and panting. It felt awesome. We got the mat that goes inside, it's nice and cushy. I haven't put on the rack yet, but hope to soon.

I can feel mine getting unstable at around 16-17mph, so when I'm going downhill I try to take it easy. When I'm pedaling, I try to stay in the 15s - easy on days that aren't windy in the flats, but once we hit any kind of hill OR if it's super windy, my speed drops like a rock. ;) (Resistance training, right?) We take 90 degree turns pretty slowly.

Our next goal is to get into and out of it in the middle of a ride. Then we can go to the dog park or she can run alongside the bike for a while and get back in when we're done (or when we have to cross paths with cars/heavy traffic bike areas).

Another picture (I imagine her asking me to move a little farther to the left):

Moby and Lily Bat. 7 year old littermates.

Very good at their job of being cute.

Love your Bostons! We have Paisley, who is now 2 and a half (or will be on Aug. 2!) Her pics are up farther in this thread.

I wonder if the chlorine in the water that has something to do with it - her being able to smell it that makes her resistent? Regardless, she looks like one very happy dog :)

kind of like Frosty Paws.

‎1 large tub of plain yogurt.
1 ripe banana, chopped up.
2 tablespoons of peanut butter.
1 tablespoon of honey.

Put all of the ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth. If your dog is like mine and likes almost anything, you can throw some other kinds of fruit in it as well, such as blueberries or strawberries.

Pour the mixture into muffin trays (I line mine with those paper muffin liners so they're easier to remove. Just don't forget to remove the paper before giving to your pup). For small dogs/smaller portions, pour the mixture into an ice cube tray instead. Pop the tray(s) into the freezer overnight. Voila! Doggy ice cream treats.

Not really my pet but one persistent feline who keeps trying to move in. He's been hanging around for about a month now. Because he was so very skinny another tenant and I have been feeding him. He's very friendly toward people but he and Brat Cat are very territorial over the same territory  . Chloe is very interested in him but, alas, the feelings are not reciprocated. I've contacted a Trap/Spay-Neuter/Release group in the area about possibly having him fixed and getting some medical care if it's determined he's been abandoned. Last year he had a collar (buckle, not snap-away) and now he doesn't. I was pretty sure he lived in the building behind mine but people have moved out of there and the current batch of tenants deny knowing anything about him. If he got along with Brat Cat & Chloe I'd consider taking him in.

He's looking kind of demonic in the second picture.

After much debate with myself and with friends, I have decided to get a 3rd dog. AKC agility is a whole lot of running around and doing nothing, so entering 2 dogs is actually an advantage, or at least that's at the top of my justification list. Anyway, my 2 dysfunctional wonders love my friend's Italian Greyhounds, so while that's not the breed I would pick, it is clearly their pick. Murphy's girlfriend is pregnant (not by him, by a champion Italian Greyhound), so here is what I hope is a wonderfully different "show us your pet" photo - it's one of these 4 (or possibly 5) fetuses.

Lots if tears are Hung in her mane, and many miles together have been rode. She helped me gain confidence after a broken back, and saw me through a divorce and some heartbeat.

My new puppy (no longer an x-ray), a few hours old. Born 1 day after my birthday. She's a red Italian Greyhound with a black face, and a white-tipped tail. I joked that I had to have one with a white-tipped tail (makes dogs easier to spot when they are running through the brush).
