I really hope someone claims him pronto. I can't keep him, and he's obviously a pampered lapdog. Someone must really be worried about him. He smells like my Grandmother--kindof like gardenias.

Take him to a local vet, shelter, or rescue organization and ask them to look for a chip. They'll do it for free and may be able to look up his owner on the spot.
More and more people are chipping their dogs.

+1. Also, if it smells like someone's grandma, it might be that it actually does belong to someone's grandma. I doubt she'd be looking on a community website. Perhaps some actual posters put up around the neighbourhood would be useful. He can't have wandered too far.

Notify your nearest Humane Society , animal shelter, AND your local animal control person. These places are where folks call and leave a number when they've lost a pet.

The rightful owner has been found! Sammy is the dog's name and he's quite the escape artist, apparently. His owner is not a Grandma, but a nice young woman who works in a dog grooming shop. She was worried sick over him all day, until a neighbor saw the posting on the website and called her, and then called me.

I did leave my name with Animal Control, I posted flyers in the neighborhood, and I let all the dog people and dog trainers that I know that I had found the dog. I called the local vet for a microchip scan, but they are closed on Wednesday afternoons. Turns out this dog is not yet microchipped anyways.

It all worked out. Enough dogs! I'm too busy for these distractions at the moment!

This is Ollie. We adopted him in May (from a private party) and he's two years old...which in Lab Mix (or whatever he is)...means still a puppy! I can't believe how much energy he has and how much he loves running. It makes me sad to think of how little exercise he got before. :(

I take him out on the beach cruiser every morning and he runs 5-7 miles before I go to work. :D

Ollie is a great-looking dog! He's lucky you found him. And those kitties look mighty comfy on that sofa. I've had so many cats growing up, but very few orange ones. The few I had were all named Orange Cat. I think there were three.

I'm calling this my $200 photo. Murphy (who's ~10 years old) treed a squirrel. The squirrel kept falling or jumping out of trees and the dogs were right on it's tail. Eventually Murphy skewered his eye with a twig - $200 vet bills and we aren't finished yet. Neat photo though

So my sister just moved homes in Denver after 12 years, and their sweet little kitty Tonks just disappeared. Having read Tulip's experience, I suggested she leave her number with Humane Society, Animal Control, and all local shelters, plus post something on Craig's List. Plus neighborhood flyers.

He is really a special little guy, and I hope they get him back. If there is anything else they should be doing, please let me know and I will forward it to her. I lost a wonderful cat after a move, and it broke my heart for a long, long time. I'd like to spare her family the same pain, if possible.

It's possible that the cat will make it back to the old house. Maybe your sister could ask some former neighbors to keep a lookout for the kitty.

MartianDestiny

Sorry to hear :(

I agree that the cat likely tried to go "home" and they are pretty good at knowing where that is. So if she can keep an eye out, post fliers, alert the vet's offices and shelters, etc on the "way home" (take a straight line, add a buffer to it) she might get lucky. Having the old neighbors keep an eye out would be very smart as well.

Badger, do you still have your foster dog from Taiwan? Does she like Howie?

no, Mandy's at another foster home where she's doing alright. She was quite overwhelmed by the sounds/sights of the city (I live smack downtown with a lot of traffic) and she wasn't doing well. She never managed to pee outside and she eventually started to pee/poo inside. If I lived in a more quiet neighbourhood and wasn't working full time and could help her with her socialization I would have, but she was just going backwards with me.

Howie's curled up in a ball on my lap right now, he is SO small - size of a kitten! and no, I really can't keep him. It's funny, though, because I finally made up my mind that I'm not ready for a dog for a while and in comes Howie. But honestly, he's such a good little dog he'll have no trouble finding a home.

Denver Fire Department found the cat in downtown Denver (!), almost exactly halfway between the old house and the new. The microchip identified her. Tonks is on her way home!

ah, correction. My sister told me it was actually the "firehouse animal care" vet, not the fire department who connected the dots and found Tonks' family. I thought the involvement of a large metro fire department a bit extreme, too, but, well, she is quite the kitty;).

Glad Tonks is on her way home. Was she named after the Harry Potter character? I love that name. My kitty is currently anticipating the return of egg nog season. She has to have her own (a tiny bit in a little cup) or she won't leave us alone. She dips her tiny paw in and licks it off a little at a time. It takes her all evening but she relishes every drop.

Hugs to you and your kitty.

Yes, Tonks is named after the Harry Potter character and is appropriately magically lucky.

Papaver: I love your Bostons! Is the brindled one also a Boston? I have decided after much contemplation that my beloved Sweetpea whom I got through a pitbull rescue in Portland, OR, is actually a "Boston Bull." I thought her secondary breed may be French Bulldog, because she definitely resembles one, but the underbite, the ears, the weird little tail, her soft coat, and especially her very playful personality tells me she is more likely a Boston.

A woman in my dog training club did. It was all for fun, and partially driven by the rarity of mutts in the club. We made a contest out of it. The dogs that were suggested by the test were rather 'out there' as far as the dog looks.
I don't want to know - I'm 100% sure Murphy is a purebred mutt and I'm 75% sure Finn is a shiba-beagle cross.
Those tests also only do selected breeds (and don't include shiba's, for example).
I love my mutts, and I love them for being mutts.

Lunacycles - you have a beautiful and I think potentially purebred mutt. - I'll PM you with my paypal addy for the $60 :p

I had always figured Chevy was mostly-rottweiler, and other parts unknown. Now that I've been looking at Petfinder a lot and see so much of his face in staffordshire terriers, I think he may have had a bit of that thrown in there. He was smaller than the typical rottweiler (80lbs) so that makes sense. He had the cutest bow-legs, though.

Toby may be a show dog but he's still "all golden" (bird -- goose? --- dog!). Hayley is simply gorgeous. I love those thick furry tails (my Margot and Fiona both have them -- poor Maeve's tail is a bit scrawny for a golden, particularly since Fiona loves to pull the fur off of it!).

Janice, Margot has calmed down considerably since she was spayed in early October. The girl is simply gorgeous---really is a shame that the breeder didn't keep her for a show pick. I need to take some new photos and post them to their blog soon.

Thanks for sharing pictures of your two. :)

My last Pet Post highlighted our JRT, Cooper.
Now I want to introduce you to Bo.
He is our spoiled-as-an-outdoor-cat-can-get cat.
This is his tent.
He also has a heated dog/cat house and a favorite shelf in our shed.
He has no toys because they are beneath his dignity.
He must live outside because our youngest son is dangerously allergic to cats.
He is supposed to keep our house in the country pest free.
Unfortunately, sometimes he falls short on the job.
But we think he's swell anyway.
The dogs love him.
He was chosen over the other two shelter kitties because he was hanging from the cage swatting at us.
The other two were huddled together trying to look their cutest. Not an asset for an out-door model.
We were afraid to pick him up at first because he was so wild.
To our surprise, he snuggled in and was very docile.
He is the best of both worlds!

Another of Maddie, the snowdog. Not sure what her breeding is, but she lays out on the front lawn in a snowstorm like she's sunning herself on a warm summer day.

My cat "Smudge". She's a funny one. Here I am sitting at my desk and she is letting me know she'd like to come in. It's a good 5 foot jump from the ground to the window. She made a brief appearance on America's Funniest Home Videos a few years ago. When Maddie and I go for a run, she goes with us. Quite a sight... me running with a black dog and a white cat. :D

"Chinning you, that's funny!
My Suki (of the bunny feet) does this too, but with her nose. She claims us by shoving her cold wet nose into our neck or cheek and then just leaving it stuck there.
Her nose feels like a piece of cold bologna or something, so we refer to this as getting 'the bologna treatment' from Suki. :D

Like people, some horses grow more hair than others! Tat's got enough tail for 3 horses, and enough mane for 5! I love the tail, but if I don't keep after the mane (keep it short), or braid it, I can't see anything in front of my saddle except hair! It's like riding a mop. I generally do keep it short since it's not the long flowing kind of mane. It sticks straight up and sprouts in every direction.

This is only half of his mane. He's got more like it on the other side of his neck.

With the vermiculite you can just lift out the soiled part and replace the lot every few months.

Toby is beautiful!

Do you believe in karma??? Remember my rescue earlier this year, Rusty? After 4 months of trying to retrain his fear agressive behavior, we gave him to the trainer we had been working with. A week after he had him, he sent us an email saying he was doing well.

Over the past 5 months I have sent him 3 emails asking for an update on how he was doing. Nothing. I got a phone call this morning saying Rusty was on some guys porch this morning! I called the number I had for dog trainer dude (DTD) and a guy answered saying I had the wrong number.

So I did some googling this morning and found he has a facebook page with a picture of his two dogs he had before Rusty, and Rusty! So, do I take Rusty back or hunt DTD down to pick him up? Because of his lack of replies I was wondering if he was for real and Rusty was safe. And what dog trainer wouldn't change his tags and put his info on it?

The real concerns are if the aggressive behavior has been corrected, which I would think it was since there are 2 other dogs in the house. His 1 email told me he had bonded with his cat, lol. And I don't have one of those! Just Zeus, my 13 yo border collie who Rusty had taken to biting at the end. And I still don't have a job so it's gonna be a tough winter anyway.

Any thoughts, ideas, points to ponder?? I've always felt bad giving him up and my son has asked about him during this whole time. I thought maybe this was the worlds way of saying he belongs with us. Or worse, that Zeus didn't have much more time with me (he's healthy though).

OK, enough rambling. TIA.

So what's Rusty been up to the last five months? Has he, in fact, been with a trainer who has worked with him effectively, or has he been ignored, neglected, or worse, abused? I find it very strange that the so-called trainer seems to have disappeared. I would find it very surprising if DTD actually made progress with him. But maybe I'm being over skeptical.

In your last posting when you had to give Rusty up, you were very concerned that he would bite your son, and that you son was scared of him. I don't see how taking Rusty back without knowing how he has been treated the last five months. You could be putting your son in danger of being bitten and developing a lifelong fear of dogs.

I don't think your only options are the two that you stated. You could contact a rescue organization or a refuge. Rusty needs a place that is appropriate, and it does not seem like your place is appropriate for him, at least it was not five months ago. He probably needs a place without other dogs or kids.

EDIT: If you do take him back, I would really encourage you to work with a reputable trainer, not just with the dog, but with the whole family/household. It's not enough to have a trained dog. The people need to know how to interact with the dog, and so do the other dogs. That's going to cost $$, which I know is tight. Something to think about. Best of luck to you.

Wow. I think Tulip has some good advice.
I do believe in Karma, so if it were me, I'd give him another chance. But, that isn't the smart thing to do.
Do you have a dog training club? If you could get in touch with dog enthusiasts int he area, they might have training options and/or training advice for you.

I basically agree with Tulip.

If you are really interested in possibly keeping him you could give it a week or two and see how he is. You'll probably get a sense by then if his old habits are returning or if he's significantly better.

In that time look at rescues/no kill shelters/and other options. I don't remember his issues, but it could just be he needs a house with no small children and no other dogs. That's not a terribly uncommon request from independent rescues, so they'd probably be willing to work with you/him. Especially if you're willing to "foster" him while he's up for adoption.

I think I'd be very hard pressed to track down a "trainer" and give the dog back when that "trainer" never changed the dogs info, won't answer your phone calls, and lost the dog though.

Finding a good trainer would be a Godsend if you wanted to keep him, but could be expensive especially for one on one work (I pay $70 a session). That may or may not be feasible at this point.

Anyway, I'd say yes it is fate. I wouldn't say that means you have to keep him. Finding him a new home either independently or with the help of a reputable rescue is another option worth exploring; especially if his aggression is still showing.

mtbdarby
12-03-2009, 07:41 AM
Thanks for the insight Tulip and TS. I called my vet and she said a similar thing but didn't have any rescues to recommend me to. I left messages for 2 rescues in the area I found on the internet and am waiting to hear back. If they could help me screen him I'd be more comfortable. I also posted an ad on CL to see if DTD will email back with a current phone number so I can see if he'll tell me what the heck happened.

When we worked with this trainer (who had good references) he did work with us as a family. His website has a lot of pix of Rusty in different scenarios so it's weird he updated the pix and not his phone number. Of course, that was his only job and in this economy in a sparsely populated area, maybe he had to give up his cell phone/business recently. Who knows. All I can do is try my best to find the best home for Rusty, regardless of where that ends up being.

This will be an interesting day!

Rusty update - after serious thought, I decided not to take him back. I did talk to the people that found him and they were just a few blocks from the address on DTD website. They took him over and returned him. Guess he's still training dogs and Rusty seems to be fine there so he's "home".

It would still be nice for the guy to return my emails but what can you do?

Thanks for walking me through the dilemna!

oldie but a goodie:

The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.

Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpe ndicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don't. (2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture. (3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people. (4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they (1) eat less, (2) don't ask for money all the time, (3) are easier to train, (4) normally come when called, (5) never ask to drive the car, (6) don't hang out with drug-using people; (7) don't smoke or drink, (8) don't want to wear your clothes, (9) don't have to buy the latest fashions, (10) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and (11) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..

Poor Margot. I had to rush her to the vet Friday when I got home. Her face was swollen---apparently she was having an allergic reaction. Vet thinks it might have been a bug bite, which makes sense (I've seen more spiders in the house since we had a cold snap last week). Other than the swelling, she checked out OK (heart, breathing, no swelling in her throat, etc).

After a shot of benedryl and an IV of steroids, the swelling went gradually went down. $200 later.....

The final indignity: the vet looked at her and said, "she's FAT." I tried to tell her that Margot was just fluffy and big boned, but the vet wasn't buying it! :):):) She's just about 8.5 months old and has to go off puppy food. My poor pork chop.

Glad to hear she is ok. My poor Fergus got told he was a little fat last time we visited the vet. Since then he has lost about 2 kilos. The vet was pleased but Fergus still looks a little sad when he sees the smaller amounts in his bowl at dinner.

The cosmic law behind the disproportionate space a dog occupies on its beloved owner's bed and the insistence to sleep more or less 90 degrees to the owner's centre line is as awesome as any. It shocks me how much bed space your sweet little pooch will insist on occupying! And how much I will contort my body to accommodate them!

It's between -20 to -30 with windchills now. Poor Zeus went out to go potty and stayed a bit too long. I was just getting ready to go check the snowbanks at the 10 minute mark. I went to bed and Ruthie was sleeping against my back. I woke up at one point and found that I was on my back in a plie position with her smack in the middle. Amazing the subliminal powers she has over me in my sleep.:p Of course, this was after she threw a fit when I tried to take a Christmas picture with her. Take a camera out and she walks right up to it, ruining whatever scene you were trying to capture. Take a camera out because you actually want her to look at it, and she runs in fear. Apparently things have to be on her terms.

Good lord, DB, is dog wearing leopard fur? What a vixen.

I had "pork chop" (Margot) out for a walk this morning and she stole a stick from a sweet little yellow lab named Dorothy. I had to pry it out of her mouth to give it back---it broke and each dog got her own smaller portion to carry. Margot carried that thing more than a mile home and of course, wanted to bring it inside. It's now on our front porch, waiting to be carried on her next walk.

Does any furry creature ever really "need" a sweater? Really? Because my two terrier mixes are perfectly fine lying outside on the lawn furniture at 37 degrees (like now) when they could come right in through the doggie door and sleep on the warm couch where it's 67 degrees! They CHOOSE to be out there in the cold. So do the cats. I just don't understand dog sweaters! lol.

Little Ruby should get whatever the little dear desires.

My old Jack Russell shivered a lot. We used to think she was cold, but eventually we concluded it was a tremor. People would even ask, "oh is she cold?" I'd just say, "no, probably just Doggie Parkinson's or something." One of her close relatives, at my dad's house, does it, too. Probably genetic.

mtbdarby

Pretty much, lol. They just have to be current on their rabies and well behaved. Zeus has been doing it for over 8 years and was originally screened through a humane society program called Love-a-Pet. Now a days they have certification programs for therapy dogs but here it is only required to bring them into hospitals and schools/libraries for reading programs (being certified covers them under liability insurance). Call a local nursing home/assisted living facility and ask them what their requirements are.

It's wonderful! I really enjoy it myself and I take my son once a month too. Everyone wins! We just have to be a little careful in the winter because it's so warm in the nursing home that we sometimes take a break outside to cool off a bit (more so when I brought my elkhound). I've never had a problem finding a facility to bring him too. Good luck!

My dog is so incredibly sweet and gentle, I have thought of doing the same. How do you go about it? Just call them up?

When I did it with Remy (RIP) we had to be approved by a local organization called Pets on Wheels. They did screening tests on the dog. There were three deal breakers: no jumping on people AT ALL, must take treats gently, and couldn't freak out at wheel chairs, walkers, canes, etc. Then they trained the owners on what we could and couldn't do, basically nothing even resembling nursing care or bringing food, etc, because some residents would ask for that.

It was very rewarding, but sadly none of my current dogs have a suitable temperament.

And happy birthday to Zeus!

I can't believe how bummed I feel right now.

I had this guy saved in my favourites for a while, and had assumed he was adopted long ago, as it was a few months ago. I clicked, and he's still homeless. He's older, so it broke my heart that he's still looking for a home.

So I had made arrangements to meet him and to foster him but have been swamped at work these two days so I've not been able to go meet him. So when I called them again to tell them I can't make it til tomorrow, I was told "oh, someone's interested in him".

Good news that he's finally getting some interest, but did it have to be when I was getting all excited?!? I'm happy at the prospect he might find a home, but for MONTHS nobody showed any interest and all of a sudden all this might be moot. I had to cry while driving home because this would have likely ended up as an adoption so I was getting myself all psyched for it.

His name's Hobie, it really suits him.

Over Xmas we added some new members to our family.
We have four very cute chickens. For those interested in chickens here is the list of breeds:
1 light sussex
1 buff sussex
1 coronation sussex
1 buff orpington

We did start with two silver laced wyandottes but found out after a few days that they were roosters so the breeder took them back. I would love a rooster but unfortunately we are not allowed to have them were we live.

The buff orpington is a little younger than the others and still a bit scruffy looking but she is my favourite. A very calm inquisitive chicken.

I will post some snaps soon.:)

I'm just trying to understand having a rabbit. Does he listen to commands?
Enlighten me.

Some rabbits tolerate being held. Some don't. His partner, Tasha, who died in April, would tolerate being held (operative word: tolerate. No rabbit likes being held. As a prey animal, it's fairly deeply engrained that being held means being carted away as something's dinner.). When Tasha was done being held, she'd DIG at your chest (and sometimes bite). It was her way of saying "LET ME DOWN....NOW!!" Noah will not tolerate being held. It makes clipping his nails a challenge.

Generally, if you lie on the floor, a bunny will come over and investigate. In his younger years, Noah would climb on top of Tom's or my back. He liked to be up high and have a command view of the room. No longer, however. When you no longer hold their interest, a bunny will leave you. Although I've never had a cat, I imagine they're like a cat in this regard.

Noah knows his name. He knows (or at least responds to) his name, as well as "salad" and "cookie" and "banana" and "out." Bunnies are a unique beasty. Interactive, but on their terms. And...no crack of dawn walks in pouring rain, and no college tuition! :D:cool:

I clicked on the "Demon Cat Hates Camera" link (hysterical) and Ruthie came running over from the other room:p

Here's a video of Ruthie during a fairly regular occurrence around here.

Oh my gosh, just like Suki (aka Bolognius Chunk) during her 'wilding' runs!

Please tell me where you got that cat tunnel- the 'Sukinator' would go mad over it!

That was hilarious! I had to watch it twice to catch that first slide into the cat house:p

I think it was Walmart, but I'd bet Petco would have something similar. My friend put up a picture with her 3 year-old standing in the same tube:p

We adopted a new kitty. His name is Cooper and he's an absolute doll!

It's hard to get a good shot of him because he rarely sits still unless he's asleep and he's a light sleeper!

This is him on the day we picked him up:

I decided to take a photo of Murphy at the same spot as he got the thorn in his eye. After taking the photo, I followed his eyes to see Finn way up above my head in the tree, a few feet from an unconcerned squirrel. Didn't get a photo, as the reason the squirrel was unconcerned was that Finn was about to fall. I managed to slow her fall and she's fine. But, I like the look of 'what the...'? on Murphy's face.

A few seconds later, as I was attending to stupid Finn, Murphy tried to climb the tree, guess he thought it looked like a good idea. My stubby legged, chubby, old man made a good 6 inches up the tree before falling onto his back. Love his can-do spirit!

He was obviously absent the day they handed out legs. I think he was built by a committee, and the subcommittee on legs was dissed by all of the other committee members.
I have to keep him on a strict diet, when he gets to ~20 lbs his belly starts dragging on the ground. He and my other dog, Finn, are both 19-20 lbs, but she can stand over him.
He gets around pretty good, though.

Cooper and Murphy are adorable! I so want another dog - but I must resist until I get a job!!!

CL has an ad for a elkhound/border collie pup. I SOOO wanted to go look at her. But I knew it would be bad if I did - who can resist a puppy??

who can resist a puppy??

Not me! When we went to the shelter to get Cooper, I refused to go into the dog side or I'd have come home with dog #3. Puppies are the hardest to resist, but I'm a sucker for any dog that needs a home. :o

Bob, what's your dog's name? (S)he's adorable all snuggled up like that. Can (s)he still walk?
Murphy is cold all the time, but with his big body and thick neck, I've never found anything that he can wear without tripping over it. I've tried lots of things, though.
