Wow Tulip! They could be siblings, though your Shiloh looks a bit bigger.
Shiloh's knee-high (to me, I'm 5'6") and weighs 45 lbs. He would be a great frisbee dog but he's had hip surgery so he can't do those flips and things. But he loves agility.

Hi! Thanks for asking about my mare. The photo is from 1973---I had her from 1978--1994. Her name was Red Apron--here's her online bio.
We loved her soooo much!

My two dogs were french-kissing each other this morning! One of them apparently had a flavor, and that got the other one licking her face, and before you know it, they were both licking each other's snouts until they licked all the flavor off. It was hilarious!!
Ana, you could always have birds or guinea pigs. I saw some might cute guinea pigs today. They remind me of hippopotamus (hippopottumi?)

I have a hard enough time taking care of myself. Bikes are easy because you don't have to feed them in order to ensure their existence. ;) Plus I'm still at the point in my life where I move every year or so :p Landlords aren't particularly fond of allowing pets (plus usually it requires a fee).
I don't really care for birds. I have had small animals as a child but think I am done with that.
I think it will be better to wait until I have the time and financial stability to properly train and take care of a puppy :) Plus I'm currently focused on what I am to do with my life... :p :)
Thank you for the suggestions, though :)

I had a guinea pig as a pet in college. They are super cool but don't live very long. I loved when I got home, I'd say "Lucy...I'm home" (she was red/white) and she made these squealing pig noises. When you pick them up they purr like a kitten. They are a little messy though but a cool personality for a rodent.

The hardest part of having a pet is when they leave us :( I don't think I could get attached to something that would be gone in a couple years :( Why can't they just coincide with our own lifespans? :( :p

This is Mari. She is about 14 years old. We have had her for almost 6 years. We got her from my friend's family. Mari was their family dog but their 2 kids had grown up, moved out, went to college, got a job, etc. The parents had jobs that had them traveling domestically and even internationally for weeks at a time so they wanted to find a new good home for Mari. We're so glad that we offered to take her because she is the sweetest dog. Because she was originally a shelter dog, we have no idea what kind she is. She is either a unique purebred (like a Tibetan Terrier) or she is a wonderful mutt.
She looks to have some Schnauzer.

Yup, I just paid a fair hunk of gold to the landlord for my little Luna. I don't care though, she's worth every penny. It's cheaper than the therapist I need without them!!!! I've always had a dog in the house and the last year has been hell coming home to no kisses.

I paid more in vet bills and pet depostis for Maggie Bear (the dog in my signature) than some people pay for cars. But in 2004 when I went through my first battle with depression it was Maggie who nutured me through the darkest days. I would be crying and she would beg to be picked up to cuddle me. She was worth every penny. Congrats on Luna, pet people get it. :D

Ana, it's worth the broken heart. I lost the dog of my heart (Agnes) to cancer after only 8.5 years, a loss I will never truly get over. But I would do it again for that time with such a special soul. I also know I will see her again.
I love my other goldens and was heartbroken to lose Maud in March. They bring so much joy and ask for so little in return.
That's the thing about life. Loss is inevitable, be it to death, distance, or the end of a relationship.

+1 Mick.
I expected to have Maggie live to be 15 years like most schnauzers but she only got to be 9 and only 5 of those were ours. Three months later I am still trying to move past the pain, you are blessed to get a special soul like Agnes or Maggie. The love we got was worth it but I won't lie to anyone, letting her go was one of the worst things I have felt.

Hi all... I've just been reading through several pages of this thread catching up on everyone's new pets, and the losses, also.
I've been pre-occupied by own dog's illness lately. Mac, my 11 yr old black lab, came down with cancer. Not just one, but TWO kinds... leave it to a vet's dog to manage that one.
We had to remove her spleen in an emergency surgery, as it was bleeding. She recovered very well, but then got more and more sore on her left leg. Turns out there is (presumably) another type of cancer in that bone in two places.
SO.... wow. What do you do with that? Well, we found a great pain control cocktail of meds, and she thinks she is still 2 yrs old again! That is really nice to see. And I think I will start a little chemo for her this week and see how she handles it -- it's only once every 3 wks for 4 treatments, and hopefully she'll have more comfort and prolonged survival if we do.
Wish her the best of luck! Dogs' spirits are truly amazing -- she is just still SO happy, it is unbelievable. Funny, as a vet I deal with this with clients and friends all the time, but this will be my first dog lost of my own (at least as an adult, away from mom and dad). I didn't get a dog till after I was 30 yrs old after leaving home.
Here she is from this winter!

Jesvetmed - hope Mac gets to feeling better soon. Is it a good thing or a bad thing to have a Vet for a Dog Mom?
I was off work last week - vacation of no responsibilities - and took Nala to the groomers for her Summer Part II shave - poor thing looks so skinny. But she is cooler. Anyway, yesterday's rain storm cooled things off a lot, and with her lack of fur, she was prancing on her walk! Me, I was looking at the lightening bolts at the coming storm, but she was a happy dog, cool breezes, cool temperatures, life is good.

Darby,
You did way way more than almost anyone else would to help that dog, and when you gave him up (for very GOOD reasons) you made sure he was going to a person who would take care of him and know his history.
I admire you for having put so much into trying to help that dog adjust to your home.
But you have made the right decision. Time to take a deep breath and move forward. :o

Not a rescue exactly. I "adopted" a retired show dog. I could call it a rescue, but really it was a breeder decreasing her large number of dogs. Rehomed show dogs don't really count as rescues, IMHO, but I really love terriers and always wanted a Border Terrier and jumped at the chance to get this 2 year old boy, whom I was told was submissive and would fit in with my two rescues with issues.
After 1 week of acclimation (I rushed it, should have been 2). I got the three out together for the first time and got out leashes to take them on a walk. Murphy was his usual excitable self, jumpy and happy at the prospect of a walk and Chip attacked him, picked him up by the throat and shook Murphy.
I tried several things for 3 weeks, basically keeping them apart. But, Chip kept managing to attack Murphy. Poor Chip was spending 22 hr/day in a crate because I could never let them near each other.
Three times Chip got to Murphy - always with blood ensuing. One time Murphy was in a crate and Chip viciously attacked the crate, leaving his own blood everywhere, I can only assume he bit his tongue. Murphy was unhurt, but the incident made things worse, after that, even when Chip was crated, Murphy would either hide, or try and attack Chip when he was in his crate. So, everytime Murphy got excitable, Chip attacked him. Didn't matter if Murphy's excitement was positive (going for a walk) or negative (two strange men in my yard), the result was the same. Everytime Murphy was forced to walk by a crated Chip, Murphy would attack the crate.
Now, Chip was a sweet terrific dog, everything I want in a dog, in every other aspect. The breeder wanted me to keep Chip as my "working dog", and Murphy and Finn as my "bed" dogs - but I just couldn't justify crating Chip when I wasn't working with him - 22-23 hr/day in a crate. Chip was brilliant at everythign I did with him, though - he was going to be an agility star, I had no doubt.
Murphy, meanwhile refused to come out of the bedroom, even with Chip in a crate, and didn't want to go on walks anymore.
The photo above is what Murphy is like on walks, my old man loves to run. He's back that way now that Chip is back with his breeder.

For example, I'm printing off something and was going to go upstairs for a second. hee hee. I think puppies have to be like childbirth (but I wouldn't know). You forget the pain so you want to do it again. My DH reminds me constantly what trouble our puppies were... but I've forgotten all that.
Jimbo (the golden) hid a bone I gave him 3 years ago. I have searched the house over many times and have never found it. Every now and then he goes wandering, like he's looking for his long lost bone... I think one of the other 2 dogs found it and ate it behind his back. He looks sad when he comes back from his wandering without it. ;)

I've always loved the name, so it's a coincidence that my favorite frame builder is named Margo! We were considering calling her Orlagh (Irish for Golden Princess), Veronica, Siobhan, Clare, or Brigid. As we got closer to picking her up, we decided to go with Margot Therese. Right now, she's been called "Get back here," "Give it up," "Down," "Leave it," and "No" more than Margot!
Her AKC name is Stormy Point's Surf's Up.

I'm seriously considering creating a website for the girls, where I can post their stories and lots of pictures.
Oooh, that will be fun! Let me know!
Brandi, I was watching some program on t.v. and the host introduced the "bat lady". She came on the set wearing two sets of shirts and bats snuggled in between them. It was interesting to see what she pulled out for the viewers.

I don't have a recent photo on this computer (*cough, cough*, the office), but yesterday I took my tuxedo kitty, Herald, to the Vet as he's been a bit gimpy lately. Yes, he has arthritis in his hips, but apparently that is the least of his problems. He's also dropped 4 pounds .. HOW could I have missed that!:eek: His blood sugar was sky high, and his diabetes is out of control. He was on special diet, well now he's on insulin. Today was his first insulin shot. Hope he gets to feeling better soon.
In the back of my beady little mind is how do I keep the insulin cold when/if we have a power failure due to hurricanes?

Tulip and Martian, your beds look about right.
I've been known to sleep crosswise at the bottom of my bed to not disturb the bosses sleeping on the pillows.
This is Kaylee.. our beautiful dalmatian.
She's 3 and just loves human company. You wouldn't believe it by her size but she is an inside dog :)
When Ruthie isn't sleeping or hunting from the safety of a window, she's in Devil Cat mode. Jumping out from behind walls to attack me, hauling from room to room, her paws literally squealing as she corners. All with ears flattened and eyes wide open, just large black disks. Recently she's taken to attacking my bed, randomly pouncing on folds, then launching off the side to run under the bed, and back on top. Here she is in all her glory last night:

We say Suki is "wilding" when she does that.
Yes, they don't like it when we laugh.
At one point this morning while we were having our coffee in bed, Suki leaped across the entire double bed and halfway across the room too while only ricocheting off the ground once! Kitty pinball.

Oh but what joy to watch them "wild" kitty antics. The 2 youngest of mine do it...one more than the other. I wish I had more mornings when I did not have to leave for work so I could enjoy the "ping-ing"!
I call her devil cat because of the way her ears flatten and the tips point up, like devil horns. I usually egg her on by looking her straight in the eye and taking a quick step towards her, causing her to fly in the other direction and then run back and try to attack from behind (she'll only attack me from behind:confused:) Or I'll look at her and run to another room, only to have her come charging after me a moment later. We both end up breathless by the time it's over:p

They are smart. The way I have heard them described is that where a golden retriever takes a while to learn something then does it all the time, a dal learns things quickly and then figures out other ways to do them. They can be a challenge. My old boy is my obedience, agility, tracking dog and the puppy is starting to learn all of those things.
How old is Kaylee? She's a cutie.

Sometimes life just sucks. I happened to take today off, and finally got my porch kitty, Patches, to the Vet to get her shots. I've been feeding her for several months, slowly making friends. My vet said that I could bring her in without an appointment and they'd work her in for shots if I dropped her off. Since she's semi-feral, they tested her for feline HIV, and she was positive. And since she's was a sweet cooperative kitty, they drew more blood and tested her again, still positive. :(
Patches is (was) a neighborhood kitty that a neighbor started feeding after Hurricane Katrina. Near as we can tell she was probably someone's cat that got turned out when they evacuated and then lost in the storm, and she found her way to Vicki's house, and then eventually to mine. Amazingly she absolutely loved dogs. Somewhere along the way Patches was spayed (her ear was clipped). She got named "Patches" because when Vicki started feeding her, she was missing a lot of fur and her white under coat was showing in big patches.
So today, she had to be put to sleep, but she was petted and loved on to the end. Then I brought her home and buried her in the garden like a kitty with a proper home should be. But she died well fed, with a satiny coat. I just couldn't fix everything. :(
Her she is on one of her rare visits to the inside, back when the weather was cooler and I had the back door open. Obviously making herself at home, albeit briefly. She never would stay inside for very long. I just couldn't convince her life is better inside:

Sorry about Patches. I can definitely relate, as I had to make the difficult decision to have our Kitty put to sleep yesterday.
She showed up 4 years ago after a bear had gotten into the garbage, and I looked out the window to see this beautiful gray cat surveying the buffet spread out around her. Our neighbors had moved away about 10 days prior to her showing up, and we believe they cruelly abandoned her to starve to death. She was very skittish and her ribs were sticking out. I fed her, and she was here to stay. My SO hates cats, so it was difficult at times for him to tolerate all her normal kitty behaviors, like walking on his freshly washed car and hunting mice and chipmunks.
Kitty followed me everywhere outside, and spent hours sitting on the stone wall, just waiting for a juicy chipmunk to poke his head out. She would sit in the shade of some plant in my garden while I weeded away. She also loved to bound over the top of deep snow, leaving these bizarre "belly prints" behind.
About a week ago, I noticed she was pretty lethargic, and then she was digging at one ear. It seemed to be infected by Sunday, and I didn't see her eat or drink. By Monday, her eye and nose was runny, and she kept swallowing. She would still purr like crazy when I petted her. I took her to the vet, thinking ahe had an ear /respiratory infection, and was shocked to hear that she had a malignant tumor on the side of her head under her ear, a high fever, and was dehydrated. The tumor was inoperable, and she was in pain and suffering, so we helped her to pass on and leave the pain behind.
Pete will make her a beautiful casket today, and she will rest at the edge of the woods near our departed birds.
Even though she was discarded like a piece of cast-off trash, she was loved and had a good home with us for the last 4 years. I will miss her terribly.
Rest in peace, Kitty.
I'm so sorry to hear about Patches and Kitty. You can both take solace in knowing you made the last few years of their lives far better than they would have been. Hugs to you both.

Maeve had her "easy button" and wart removed from her face on Friday. Vet isn't sure what the "button" is---I thought it was a sebaceous cyst, as she has several on her torso. This was hard and went the whole way down to her skull. Removed on an outpatient basis with a local---Maeve was a good girl through the entire procedure.
Vet thinks it's benign but she's never seen anything like it. Hopefully, it's just a calcification. We should have the lab results back later this week.
In the meantime, Maeve has a Frankenstein mark on her forehead---staples and stitches! Pictures are here: http://stormyptsisters.blogspot.com/. Looks like she had a lobotomy or came out on the wrong end of a bar fight w/a hooker!!

I don't know the exact day she was born, but I remember it was mid-September. So I'm calling the 15th Ruthie's birthday. Yes, still showing Toby. I brought him home at about 12 months. It's very difficult to win shows against mature goldens boys (2-3 yo). He went back into the ring a few weeks ago and won both shows he was in. I will show him until he's a Champion then will start working towards his Junior Hunter title. You're little girl is super cute. What kennel is she from? Toby is from Birnam Wood (www.birnamwood.com). Oh, and here is Hayley...all 13 years of her. She's still going strong like a 5 year old.

Janice - One golden isn't enough, eh? You're so lucky to have Hayley so long. She looks healthy and happy. We lost two goldens, Maud (11.5 yrs) and Agnes (8.5 yrs), to degenerative myelopathy and cancer, respectively.
Fiona and Margot are from www.stormypointgoldens.com. The breeder is just fantastic, does all the health testing before she breeds any of her dogs. In addition to the hunter and show titles, she has several of her "kids" certified as therapy dogs. Margot's parents are Stash and Shelby Lynne, both of whom are on the website.
Please keep us updated on your goldens' adventures. I'd love to hear more about the show "life," particularly from the Golden perspective! Best wishes to Toby in his next event.

Do you adopt senior's or something?
The first three I adopted young--1.5, 3 months, and about 5ish. All three died within 2 years of each other, and I got pretty good at dealing with old, sick cocker spaniels (kidney disease and cancer), so I adopted the two current ones, who were both about 10 when I got them (both within the last two years).
I'm thinking next time I might go for one who's 7 or 8, but some sad story about an old dog will probably get to me and I'll end up with a senior again. I used to do cocker rescue so I have an "in" with them, and the adoption process is easy.

His name was Bret (Am/Can CH Golden Pine Dustrax Maverick CDX TDX RE OS CGC Can CD) and lived a long, fun filled life (just died recently at almost 14). I know his owner and met Bret many times. That was one incredible golden because he did everything. And her pedigree from the mom's side is even more impressive. BIS, BISS/AM/MEX/AMS/WC CH Sheffield-Ducat's Spellbound SDHF,OS (call name "Strider") was probably one of the most honored goldens in the last 15 years. So I know her pedigree to some degree. Lots of her grand, great grand, etc. lived long lives. By the pedigree I can tell where she gets her great color...the Aspenglo dogs are lighter. Actually, your dogs pedigree leads back to Birnam Wood which is true for many. Interesting.

Janice - Wow, thanks! Jan (the breeder) told us that Margot's longevity pedigree was "awesome." We were very lucky to find Stormy Point. Margot's coat is extremely thick and curly. If she saw her, I bet Jan would be regretting her decision not to keep Margot for show/hunter! You should see her move on the leash. She took to it like a natural....
Keep posting pics of your sweeties.

It's gonna be a three-dog night for me tonight. I just brought home Sammy, my new puppy. My vet's office manager called today and said they had an 8-month old puppy who had been seized by Animal Control because his stupid owners had left him in a tarp-covered crate in the back yard when they went away for a weekend.
Knowing that I've had 5 cockers, and spent enough to buy the veterinarian a boat or two, she called Animal Control and said I'd provide a wonderful home for him, and they said I could have him. So now I do!
Here he is--8 months old, almost 19 pounds, very sweet. Not sure what I've gotten myself into as it's been 13 years since I've had a puppy. (Sorry about the eyes--he won't slow down enough to get a better picture.)

Our rescue adopted kitty Suki is likely around 3 years old, but we call her 'baby' because she totally acts like a kitten- rampaging and 'wilding' around the house all day just like a little kitten, sleeping with her belly up, etc. Her personality is just baby-ish, that's all. :p

I'm "stepmom" to our 7 yr old pitbull mix (at least, she was labeled as such by the shelter), Portia. She truly lives up to her name...her greatest love is food (or whoever is holding food).
She's a great ambassador for pitbull breeds, though. She's super sweet (although, she used to nudge me off of the couch when DH and I first started dating!), and most people who aren't familiar with pitbulls are surprised to find out that she could be "one of those vicious dogs."
I'd never thought about bird rescues, but that's really cool! So many good people here, opening their homes to animals of all sorts in need.:)

We're looking at getting Yukon a friend & started our search today at one doggie refuge today (we are often on two doggie refuge websites having a quick peek). There was a dog we could have taken home but we'll be away at two events in a few weeks, can't take both of them with us & can't just leave the newer one in a kennel for the weekend.
Have to tell you about this MASSIVE slobbery dog (some sort of masitff cross)that was there :( Poor thing hadn't been taken care of by its previous owner & had not only eye problems but was matted :( . A gentle giant though!

I learned recently that our local Humane Society and the local domestic violence agency have teamed up to help provide foster care for women who must leave their homes but are fearful of leaving pets behind. I plan on speaking with my landlord (who, I'm grateful, is pretty laid back and pet friendly) about getting onto the fostering list. I'm fortunate in that my apartment is large enough for both Chloe and Hunter to chase each other and play. If it can also provide refuge for another animal that may be the deciding factor for a woman leaving a violent situation I'd like to be able to do that.
What a great program. Animals are such a source of comfort. These women can know not just that their animal is safe from abuse but they could (I hope) be able to visit the animal and get them back in the future.

they could (I hope) be able to visit the animal and get them back in the future.
I would have no problem with visitations especially since the majority of the women served have children. I think that the kids being allowed to see/play with their pets would help to alleviate some of the confusion/anxiety of the situation.

This is our "new" house cat. We have had her for about a week, now. She is still adjusting. When we got her, after being quarantined by a person that my DH works with, she was 6 lbs. After a week, I think she has gained one pound. When she was more comfortable she really started to eat like crazy.
This has been a whole new education for me. How to take care of a cat. I have been looking into food and nutrion for cats and learning a lot on the forum, too.
Any ideas for a newb cat owner?

RedRock - with a longhaired cat, you definitely will need to brush her, and she's beautiful! Or you'll learn about the dreaded hairballs.
Cats are obligate carnivores - must eat meat, don't eat or digest carbs very well. So with that thought in mind, the the http://www.felinediabetes.com/diet.htm website has some interesting links to cat nutrition. Basically cheap cat food is BAD.
I have two elderly cats, both with nutritionally related diseases, that I don't know if I fed them differently they would be healthier now or not. They ate ScienceDiet most of their lives, which I thought was good for them. Still high in carb count. Or it could just be an elderly cat thing.
Still your kitty is beautiful, may you have may happy years together. Catnip mice are lovely toys.

10-08-2009, 06:48 AM
When I had cats growing up in the 70s and 80s, we fed them what was available, which was cheap-o Purina dry food. But they were farm cats and they supplemented that with plenty of mice and birds and lizards and crickets. They also got plenty of exercise and were always trim and healthy. Fudge lived to be 21, Khin-lin was 18, Marblehead was 20, and Vronsky was 15.
But if you have indoor cats, you have to feed them high-quality food. A raw diet is very much preferred for healthy, happy, and appropriate-weight cats, but not everyone is inclined to do that. So get the best food you can and give them plenty of opportunities for exercise (climbing towers and feather toys and that awesome ball-racetrack that BleekerSt Girl has for her munchkin).

bmccasland, tulip thank you for your help. I have been reading the Tortilla cat thred and this got me thinking....I have visited and read the catinfo.org page that was recommened. Yesterday, I called the vet, since I am a newb at this whole cat thing. They, ( I spoke with a tech NOT the vet) suggested that I stay with the IAMS brand of dry food. I then went and did some research on IAMS and they look no different than the chepo brands of cat food. They are still high in the carbs and low in proteins. (I hope I am not hijacking this thread, please forgive me if I am.) I need to get this cat up to weight 8-10 pounds before getting shots. What am I to do ? I also do not want this cat to become overweight. My DH and I are thinking of getting a harness so we can take her for a walk around the neighborhood when she is more relaxed.
What is a Furminizer? I have never heard of that. What does it do? Where do you get one?

Iams supports vets. Go into any vets office and 99% of the time if they carry food and the like, it will be Iams brand. IMHO Iams is marginally better than the big-box food, but only marginally. The vets ought to know better, the tech is probably repeating the Iams reps propaganda. The vet might very well parrot the company propaganda, too, since there is a sponsorship thing Iams has with them.
Again, IMHO, if you want to feed Iams, save some money and feed the cheapo stuff. If you want to spend Iams type money, buy something better.
Beautiful cat. Feeding her and loving her are good ideas, but I wouldn't worry about fattening her up specifically - with the proper care that will happen anyone. And, if it doesn't, that will mean another vet visit :(

Vets get paid to recommend certain brands (either directly or indirectly). Science Diet is another brand that does this and it's despicable. You are right, Iams is "the cheap stuff" with better packaging/advertising so it's more expensive. I hate to say it, but don't trust your vet, do your own research and make your own decision. My friend (who was feeding "Taste of the Wild, which is a raw dry food and very good) just recently had a vet recommend Science Diet supposedly to rule out food allergy issues....the dog spent 4 days at an emergency vet and almost died (not directly related to the food, but still, it was absurd to think that Science diet would be better than raw).
I have dogs (not cats) and feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul (yes, a food, not the book ;) ). It's still dry food, and it's not the best, but it is much much better than the Petigree/Iams/Science Diet/Beneful stuff (first ingredients are NAMED meats not "chicken byproduct") and fits somewhere in between on the price scale as well (I just can't justify/afford the best of the best raw diets for a voracious eater on a grad student budget). They do make a cat food as well, may be worth looking into.

This is a very loving cat. It may not show it in the pic, but she is. She has just been around in may places with no one to love her and just be nice and take care of her. She was found apparently in the middle of a traffic circle here in town. When my DH and co-worker saw her in the pound she was black from dirt and road dust ..etc.
I had a feeling that IAMS and others supported the vets. So what is one to do? You would think that, of all people, they would want to give the "proper advice". I guess when 1/2 your money is coming from selling the food, there is not much else they can do. Oh, well.
Thank you for the information on the Furminator. I will check it out. It would have been nice to have one of those with our golden retriver when I was growing up. We would get a ton of hair off that dog.
So as far as getting her to weight...what do you all suggest? I have been giving her dry food at this point. The amount I do not know, and she is free feeding at this point. That was what the vet suggested. What other places should I look for getting better food?
Thank you,
Red Rock

Right, Furminator, of course. Blame it on my bike crash...
A furminator is a great (but pricey) special comb/brush thingy. My dog loves it, and I gave one to my mom for her dogs and cats, and they line up for it when she takes it out. It will reduce shedding and reduce hairballs, which once you experience a hairball you will not think twice about spending $ to reduce them. The cat-sized furminators are about $25 at Petsmart-type stores.
Stay away from Iams, etc. I don't have cats anymore, so I'm not up on the good brands, but there's plenty of good advice given here.

Laube makes a very similar version (http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=82654&gift=False&0=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D198%26Tree%3D%2CComplete%20Catalog&1=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D123%26Tree%3D0%2CPet&2=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D170%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D1%2CGrooming%20Supplies&3=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D702%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D2%2CCombs%20%26%20Stripping%20Knives&HSLB=False&mscssid=0C1952E29CFA94F8E8E7FA1670FE6833) that's cheaper, especially when you get into the larger sizes.
My female loves this thing. The male can take or leave it, and the dog just hates it. But they all get brushed with it to remove the loose undercoat that leads to "pet hair tumbleweeds".

His mom was a registered Scottie. His dad was a fence-jumping Lab. It was actually kind of sad. We met the owner of the mother. The puppies had to be delivered caesarean because they were way too big for her (she had 6 of them). The owner of the Lab laughed about it and told the lady she needed a higher fence. When the puppies were weaned (they were supplemented by bottle because the mom couldn't feed them all) they were taken to the shelter. They did all find homes.

Margot was spayed last week and has recovered nicely, aside from a UTI. In the words of the vet, "she doesn't realize she had surgery." She completely ignored her incision.
Thank goodness she's now off "limited activity" and can wild-it-up with her sisters. LOL.

Margot was spayed last week and has recovered nicely, aside from a UTI. In the words of the vet, "she doesn't realize she had surgery." She completely ignored her incision.
Thank goodness she's now off "limited activity" and can wild-it-up with her sisters. LOL.
It'll be interesting to see who emerges as the alpha. She's already been humping Fiona who is no longer patiently taking it.
By the way, Arthur is a sweetie.
Sammy got neutered on Tuesday, and it took until 10 pm that night for him to get back to his usual crazy self. Now he's humping AJ, when he didn't do it before. What the heck is that about? Aren't puppies fun?
Edit to add: And now I find he's just chewed up the transmitter for my Polar heart rate monitor (which I thought was out of his reach). Oy! He must think I'm made of money.

I know there are some blue heeler owners round here & need to get some info from you. We're adopting a male bluey this week & would just like your insights into owning one.
Feel free to pm me.
To answer your questions you have already-The doggie was ok with Yukon when they had a "meet" at the refuge on the weekend. (a very long process involved in the adoption process at this particular refuge) Also, we have a private doggie trainer to contact for assistance.

Glad to hear you found a nice friend for Yukon.
I look forward to meeting the new family member.:)

I love the sleeping precious kitty pictures of Ruthie and Molly! TOO SWEET!!!!! :p :p :p
Oh, Molly reminds me of my departed Dinah.
That Nanook looks like he has a lot of personality. Do you know what kind of dog he is?
He looks like GSD but mixed.

Nanook's actually a girl. She looks like a boy and has a boy's name so everyone thinks she's a boy. Even my mom still calls her 'him' and it's been four or five years! lol We got her from a shelter but I think she's a gsd/husky mix. She has one blue eye and one brown and acts like a husky at times.
Here's a couple more pics of her

I am crazy for Nanook girl. What a great shelter find!
Just in time for a recession Christmas, check out The Animal Rescue Site (http://shop.theanimalrescuesite.com/store/category.do?categoryId=2709&siteId=310) clearance and sale items. Some nice stuff at great prices and every purchase helps a shelter or rescue organization.

:D She's a busy girl. And getting funny in her 'old' age. Like she won't potty in the rain. She gives me this look like I'm torturing her and I actually have to lock her outside for a few minutes or she won't do it. But go for a walk in the rain... heck yeah!
Yep, that's me he's crawling over!
That's so cute. "she's MINE!" he he
Does anyone take their dogs with them on the bike? I take Nanook for short runs and it's great. I can walk her for three hours and she'll still have energy but 10-20 mins running by the bike and she's burnt out lol

used to ride slowly through the neighborhood for about amile to exercise Miss Sadie my welsh corgie, but then she got sick with pancreatitis, now if she even sees me in exercise clothes or biking gear she runs and hides under the bed.

This is Cooper.
One of two Jack Russells in our family.
Agatha (no photo)will be 14 years of age on the 15th. Cooper is 4 1/2 years old.
We also have an out-door cat. Bo is 4 3/4 years old. Our youngest son is dangerously allergic to cats but we live in the country and Bo keeps the mice at bay. He has a heated dog house and a favorite shelf in the shed. He is very spoiled for an out-door cat.
This is a photo of Cooper in Jacksonville, FL, at a rowing regatta. He is on a bridge watching the boats. He found it quite fascinating though he did not recognize his big human brother, Drew, when he rowed by.
Cooper was not daunted by the height. He would stand on the ledge with all fours and look over. Once we turned our backs and he walked out on a skinny little bump-out that held a light pole! Exposure on three sides!
Cooper loves to chase tennis balls, catch Frisbees and cool off in the pool.
Agatha doesn't do much anymore but in her day she was fond of tennis balls and rope toys. She had springs for legs and loved to jump, grab and dangle from a rope toy for hours.
JR's do not have an "off" button. You have to hide the toy while they're not looking to get them to stop.
Bo is too sophisticated to play. Well, he does play with Cooper but only if he doesn't think we are watching.

I found, or rather Shiloh found, this little guy in the middle of the road eating a chicken bone. He has no street smarts (do Pomeranians even come with street smarts?) and was nearly hit by a car. I scooped him up and carried him home. He's surprisingly heavy for a little dog. I've posted Found Dog info on our neighborhood website and alerted the local dog people.
I really hope someone claims him pronto. I can't keep him, and he's obviously a pampered lapdog. Someone must really be worried about him. He smells like my Grandmother--kindof like gardenias.

She ALWAYS has the 'crazy' look, LOL. She's still pretty spry for 14 though.:)
How good you are to give him a home until he's claimed. Poor little thing.
