    Per the DCist,...

"What was a rumor for some and a dream for others is coming true -- the 2012 Giro d'Italia will start in the District of Columbia.

According to VeloNation, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and race organizers will make the announcement tomorrow at the Italian Embassy that the famed Giro will take place in Washington.

    Oh, sigh.
We Love D.C. said Velonation jumped the gun...

"We got a phonecall from our friends at WCSA and it seems that Velonation has jumped the gun. Tomorrow’s event is only a rally in support of DC’s bid and not an actual announcement of DC’s formal involvement. We regret the error and hope to post this story again soon."

    Maybe it'll happen anyway...

There is no way that Italians would start their race, THEIR most special race, in the USA.
It's like having the Indy 500 start in Italy.

I wouldn't be so sure that they wouldn't consider it..... the race has started outside of Italy in past years. The 2006 Giro started in Belgium.
