Cyclist struck by a car in Saratoga

As I ride this road all the time, this one struck home. What I don't understand is on the road where the accident happened, there are big bike lanes and the area is wide open and fairly flat. Tough to miss a rider, let alone two. I'm making an assumption here, but my guess is that alcohol was involved.

    The text from the article:

SANTA CLARA COUNTY (BCN) -- Two bicyclists, including a 24-year-old competitive cyclist, were injured Sunday evening when a vehicle struck them and then fled the scene on state Highway 9 in Saratoga, a Santa Clara County sheriff's sergeant said Monday.

San Jose residents David Nelson, 41, and Ashley Jackson, 24, were hit by the vehicle, possibly a silver BMW, around 5:30 p.m. on Highway 9 near Fruitvale Avenue, according to Sgt. Don Morrissey.

Nelson sustained minor injuries and until emergency personnel arrived was able to provide medical care to Jackson, who suffered from serious injuries including head trauma, Morrissey said.

Jackson was transported to a local hospital for treatment where she remained today, according to Morrissey. Jackson is a competitive cyclist for the Webcor/Alto-Velo bicycle racing club.

Nelson was treated and released at the scene.

Nelson provided a description of the responsible vehicle and described the car as possibly a silver 2003-2005 BMW with a broken passenger side mirror.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the West Valley Patrol Traffic Division at (408) 868-6627 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 808-4431.

How anyone could just drive off is beyond me! Where is their conscience? Probably a repeat offender who could not afford another "incident" ...in a Beamer, too.

When I saw the story on the news, my assumption was a cell phone being used illegally (TEXTING!!!) when it happened.

That makes me steamed when drivers just drive off and cannot take responsibility, they have no heart. I believe too that alcohol was involved as well. My prayers goes out to the two and hopefully they find the driver.
