RAMS CYCLING TEAM HIRES ANDY CLARK AS DIRECTOR SPORTIF

Fort Collins, CO – May 25, 2005 – The Rams Cycling Team at Colorado State University is pleased to announce the hiring of Andy Clark as Director Sportif for the team. Andy will be working closely with the Team and the Friends of Rams Cycling (alumni booster) to further develop the program, making Colorado State University a destination school for cyclists.

Growing up in Colorado Springs, Andy started out as a track racer, competing on the 7 Eleven Velodrome. In 1991 he came to CSU and competed on the cycling team, though in his sophomore year the temptation to race in Belgium was too great and he went to school part time and raced full time. He spent the next three years racing in Europe and then returned to compete on the professional circuit in the U.S. for the last seven years. Andy raced for the U.S. National Team in Europe and in South America. He has also raced for pro teams including Colorado Cyclist, Tokyo Jo’s, and most recently Team Rio Grand from Fort Collins. He returned to CSU, completing his B.A. in History in 1998. This past fall his wife Lisa gave birth to their first child, a girl named Harper. Andy has since retired to be a stay at home dad. He said, “I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the collegiate cycling program I raced on while in college.”

As Director Sportif (French for coach/manager), Andy will fill multiple roles.

Team director: Recruit and develop of a nationally competitive women’s and men’s mountain, road, track and cycle-cross cycling teams.

Manager: Aid officers in task management and attend weekly meetings.

Fundraising and sponsorship: Build strong ties with the community and through Friends of Rams Cycling to reduce the financial burden on students, as cycling is a prohibitively expensive sport.

Team Background: Started as the Spring Creek Vélo Club in the late 1970s, the team was named Collegiate Cycling Team of the Year in 2003. The team promotes multiple events including, the CSU Oval Criterium, first held in 1986, and since 1995, the Beaver Meadows MTB Festival. Colorado State was the first university in the Rocky Mountain region to award cycling scholarships, as well as one of only a few major universities in the United States to do so. Friends of Rams Cycling (FRC), is comprised of bicycling enthusiasts and alumni who support Rams Cycling.
