knog frogs + helmet

can you put knog frogs on your helmet, or are the strap thingies too long?

also, is the battery replaceable or do you just toss them when they die?

thanks!

Little Tid-Bit on lights going on the back of a helmet.

I always did it! I always put my light on the back of my helmet, b/c I liked people seeing my head blinking as they were driving(I always thought it made me a little more visible).

When I had my bad crash in September, the light came off my helmet, which made my helmet looser and another rider's foot/pedal got UNDER my helmet and left a big cut, which requiered 5 staples. My helmet never came off my head, and their foot did not puncture through the helmet, it literally got hooked under and pushed the helmet.

From now on, I will not wear my light on my helmet b/c if it comes off it leaves your helmet to loose.

(but I used to be the biggest proponent of putting the light there! I even used to work at an LBS and told about putting the light there)

I think it depends on the helmet and the way the light is attached. I can't stand anything sticking on the inside of the helmet but I have a light laced onto my helmet in the front because all that is on the inside is a slender strap.

I don't think that's what Emily was getting at - and it's a good point, that I hadn't thought of before. The outside of the helmet needs to be able to slide and not catch on anything. Same principle as why the shell-less helmets and the extra-long aero helmets were taken off the market.

Maybe one of those cat collars that are designed to break off as soon as they're caught on something, could be modified to mount a light on a helmet?

I use Mutant Guppies on my helmet.

White with red side-lights on the front, red with yellow side-lights on the back. They are tiny little lights, with thin elastic cord loops. Much easier to maneuver around the vents of my Bell Citi than Knogs.

The light itself is about the size of the end of my thumb.

http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=20575 The link in this review from 2 years ago is old, here's a current link to the Serfas site: http://www.serfas.com/product_details.asp?ID=290 and for the tail-light: http://www.serfas.com/product_details.asp?ID=304

They pop off the helmet immediately, as I learned when I wolloped my helmet into the door frame of my car. And they are BRIGHT. Riding home one night I kept seeing very bright red and white reflections off street signs and I thought "where's the ambulance?"... it wasn't an ambulance in the neighborhood, it was ME!

Thanks Knotted! Very helpful. Do the Guppies bounce around on your helmet?

I have a smallish Cateye light that actually attaches to my helmet quite easily and securely, and in such a way that it doesn't affect the fit at all, but I actually really like using that light on my handlebars instead (I like having two lights on my bars at night, one steady beam and one flasher). Plus I like the idea of having both a white front light and a red rear light on my helmet.

They don't bounce at all, the elastic cord holds them quite firmly.

My "tail" light sits inside the rear vent of my Citi. The cord in that case acts more like a tether. The "head" light sits on top of the helmet between two vents. It's held in place.

I'm quite fond of Guppies and Mutant Guppies. I've got, I think, 5 or 6 of them in total. (some on my helmet, some spares in various bike bags.)
Besides the guppies, I've also got a Blackburn head and tail light set on the bike, and a solid beam headlight under the flashing Blackburn on my bars so I can see the ground in the dark.

Wow. Those "Guppies" are sold at MEC in Canada (as "Turtles") for $3 or $5, can't remember. And they have a few models with more LEDs, and clip-ons (for running or for your pet).

They also sell a helmet-adapter for them.

Click here for all of MEC's bike lights:
