    runny nose

I read the post about eye watering and it made me think about my problem while riding.

I know this is gross, but do any of the rest of you have an over abundance of mucus production during riding. I swear I can be perfectly clear, blow my nose and make sure I can breath well, but I get a few miles down the road and I need to blow my nose again already. It drives me crazy, I'm constantly sniffling and I feel like it affects my breathing ability to an extent while riding.
My husband doesn't have this problem, and I have never heard anyone else complain of this but me. Am I all alone in this and just weird? LOL

Yep, I get a runny nose too. It helps if I take a Claritan before I ride. I forget to take it half the time though, so I've started carrying them in my handlebar bag.

That reminds me, I need to wash my gloves.

I suspect lots of people get runny noses, since most of the cycling gloves I've seen have soft, towel-like cloth on the back of the thumb.

<------ changed my title (and thoroughly washed my gloves ) after this weekend

There's even a name for it, exercise-induced rhinitis, and it's very common. The most frequent form is a runny nose that doesn't interfere with breathing, but congestion is common, too. Try using a neti pot before your workout.

I carry at least three tissues in my bento box and each one is throughly used by the end of the ride. I have to wash my gloves after I ride too as they are the backup wipes. Snot rockets come next. One windy day I was covered in snot from the top of my head to my hips. Even my jactet had to go in the wash after that ride. Good luck to you!

Put my nose down as being a runny one when riding or doing any sort of exercise! A PE teacher that Joe and I used to ride mountain bikes with said runny noses meant an allergic reaction to exercise! I don't know if he was pulling my leg or if he was being serious. He sure kept a straight face and continued to explain about something being released into your blood system when you exercise and this causes a sort of (not serious) allergic reaction causing the nose to run. Now was he telling the truth? To this day I never knew if I should have believed him?!

Oh and I carry tissues with me. Or just wipe my nose on my glove!

OK... I really thought that searching "runny nose" wasn't going to find me anything...

I'll have to try the neti pot. I can't believe the amount of snot I produce when I ride.

    exercise induced rhinitis

if it really troubles you, you can get atrovent nasal spray from your doctor to stop this and just have a squirt before you ride--

This is the first I've heard of Snot Rockets. Where I'm from they are called Farmers Blows. I'm from Iowa, imagine that!

I'm changing the subject a bit but your comments have me wondering - how do you wash your gloves? Mine are getting stinky. Machine washable or hand wash in the sink?

I do either depending on whether I have clothes to wash anyway. Just no dryer.

    Apparently...

I learned my snot rocket skills hiking and backpacking. Comes in handy, especially when it's really cold! I had to wash my gloves the other day, too. They were getting nasty. For some reason road riding makes me snottier than mountain ever did.
