Another data point for you...
I'm 5'4" and when I walk into bike shops, they want to put me on 51-52cm bikes. Then I can't even straddle them! I ride a 48cm WSD bike with a longer stem to accommodate my longer torso. If they made more men's bikes in a 48cm, I'd probably be on a men's specific frame (like my tri bike).
My husband is 5'10" and rides a 54 in some frames, so it really, really varies by individual!

I'm like Muirenn: Long legs, short torso. My Giant is what they call a medium (they say it corresponds to a 50cm frame). It fits my lower body fine, but not so much for my upper body, because the top tube's too long. In Specialized I'd ride a 54 with a shorter stem, 50/52 in Trek, and a 51/54 in Cannondale (probably with a shorter stem).
At least I don't leave slime trails.
