That is awesome Anne! I miss commuting. When I lived in Boulder, I didn't own a car- never felt I needed one. I either rode my bike, walked, or took RTD. I wish I lived somewhere now that was commuter friendly(south fl roads are scary for a commuter). I am working on convincing the bf to move to Boulder next year! I am so jealous you are there :-)

Is that the gas station on Arapahoe?

Excellent story!!! I am a very lucky person because I only live +/- 5 miles from work, so it's a wonderful 10 mile ride a day for me. Wakes me up in the morning and gets me going. I never have to worry about paying a huge amount of money on gas in the spring, summer and fall.

Only during winter does it KILL me at the pump. We just got dropped down to 3.17 here in Michigan Center. We were at 3.45. Wouldn't you know it I forgot and had to fill up at the 3.45 a gallon. I can't wait for warm weather.

I can't imagine living so far from work that I couldn't ride my bike. The farthest I lived was 14 miles, which was fine for bike commuting. There are ways to drive part way and bike or take transit part way. It's a habit, and habits take about a solid month to establish. But then it's natural.

Now, I work from home, so I don't commute anymore. I use my car once a week to go visit my BF. About once a month I have to travel for work out of state, but lately I've been taking Amtrak. Luckily, I live in a city that is bikeable (although it's not Portland!) and is served by Amtrak for longer trips. And, when I do drive, it's easy to get around since Richmond is pretty compact and has great restaurants and things to do and see within a few miles.

Petrol prices here are up to $NZ1.83 a litre - which equates to about $US5.60 a gallon - right now I am grateful I don't have a car and pretty much ride everywhere. I did have to buy some new panniers though - my old ones finally gave out after being used regularly for 5 years for my grocery shopping

OMG- I swear if it gets to 5.50 a gallon here. I am a full time bicyclist!!! I wish for one week everyone, everywhere would just say, You know what? I don't need your gas. I'm goin to walk or bike to work.

Unfortunately, we hear, "Gotta have it, so I guess I'll pay for it."

No, you don't. Thank goodness that I get 6-7 months a year to bike to work and do simple chores. Of course, 2-3 of those months are pretty chilly.

I say to the gas company...Do your worst! I have a compact car that gets 33miles per gallon and I only fill it up 1 every 3 weeks when I am biking!

I paid $3.21 this morning. Sadly, I live about 35 miles from work. Although technically I could telecommute, my office is not friendly to it. If I drive nowhere but work and home, I will use ~$50 of gas a week (at current prices) in a VW Golf. I really wish there were a feasible way to bike - but I haven't found one. Technically, we do have public transit, but the roads near my office are completely un-bikeable (and there's no way to take a bus - or at least without a 3 hour *each way* commute).

    Very cool article

That is a GREAT picture...it really SAYS it all w/no words needed!!

We are at 3.54/gal here in my town....I drive a Prius...so it's not as bad of a pinch for me, I can still go 400 miles for 31 bucks.

I had to travel out of state today for the week. I took the train instead of driving. I got alot of work done on the train, and it was a nice ride. Now if Amtrak only had internet (actually, not a good idea, as I wouldn't get my work done!)
