    jersey fun

    Ha ha... great ideas ladies.

I think I need a "Team Neosporin" jersey.

As for designing jerseys, try the graphic arts programs at a college. A talented student might take on the work for a little $.

Oh, and I don't know about anybody else, but cycling often makes my nose runny. (Allergies, cold weather, etc.) Can someone please design a long-sleeved jersey with a hankie you can attach to the cuff? (I don't know how many of my dad's hankies I've shoved in the cuff of my jacket.)

ok - but it has to be a lacy hankie - we women can't be sporting those bandana things! Just Kidding - I always thought terrycloth on the sleeve would be a brilliant idea!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

It's gross, but I've learned to blow and go. I need two hands if I'm going to blow my nose properly and it seems like when it's cold I'm drippy the whole time.

I use a "double-wide" terry wristband (very thick and absorbant) by New Balance, marketed to runners. Works really well for drips.

What I want to know is... how does one stop the dripping in the first place?

    runny noses

i can always tell when the weather is gonna change....(for colder), my nose starts to run on the rides. i have found that if i really give it a good blow before i leave i can get through about an hour before i start getting the sniffels. also put just a finger wipe of Vicks at my nostrils, keeps the passages semi clear too. i like the idea of terrycloth on the sleeve, but would you cater to lefties or righties?
i can't ride and blow. my glasses get fogged up, and i'm all over the road. so i have to stop, unclip get the tissue, blow and clean, then back on the bike.....yea, how does one stop it in the first place?......

    ewwww ;-)

Veronica shares "It's gross, but I've learned to blow and go. I need two hands if I'm going to blow my nose properly and it seems like when it's cold I'm drippy the whole time."

I've read that the skill the pro's uses is index finger on one nostril, clear the opposite nostril by exhaling sharply, repeat other side. Supposed to check that no one is in the trajectory. Wipe up with terry on the back of your gloves.

Sounds like it's real messy in the peloton ;-)

That's the way I do it - just like the pros. I almost hit Thom's boss one day coming down off Diablo.

Not a boast - I was quite chagrined. His son is a triathlete so he took it in stride.

Another name for it is "farmer blow." I learned it from a runner years ago and don't think twice about it anymore while riding. A quick check to make sure there's no one right behind you, which direction the wind is blowing (you really don't want it to land back on you - very embarrasing) and just go for it. You might feel weird the first few times, but it quickly becomes one of those things that you just do without thinking about, like clicking in and out of your pedals. My mother still thinks it is gross and disgusting and VERY unladylike, but then, she never rode a bike in cold, windy weather with her nose wanting to drip constantly.

I always wonder what to say when riding in a group. With folks I know I just announce that I'm going to blow whichever way I need to and wait for them to say they're out of the way. But when we're doing a century or something with lots of people I don't know, it's kind of weird.

    snot rocketry 101

In a group, move downwind if possible.

Tuck your head under your underarm (like a duck), press nostril firmly and BLOW. If you are not forceful in your blow, you *will* end up with snot all over.

Those of you who swim for x-training should be good at this; it's a lot like forcing water out of your nostrils under water.

If you are racing or on a fast training ride don't worry about grossing other riders out. At the end of the day everyone is covered with sweat, blood, mud/dirt and GU anyways...what's a little snot???
