Thanks to all of you for your wonderful stories! I now have a sense of rural Tennessee and old buildings in Texas just from reading about you all!

Bluezfire- Enjoy your rides with small groups. They are my favorites! The century I did this past weekend was only about 600 people. Everyone was friendly and thoughtful. When you get into large organized rides, its a whole different story.

Just come out to good old California where we have rides for thousands and you'll be glad you live in a rural area!!!

Real name: I'm not fond of giving my name out on-line since it's uncommon

Where do you live? Corvallis, OR

Explanation of your handle: I've spent a few months camping to cut down on expenses. I'll be doing some more this summer, but this time I'll be paid for it by the local Girl Scout camp. Say hello to no sleep for the summer! Wooo!

Explanation of your avatar: Hmmmm....I'll find one, honest!

    Age (general or specific) 24

Occupation: Weekend warrior and scholastic maven

Favorite bike: Hopefully the next one I buy...once I figure out what that will be

What's in your stable? Fuji Palisade

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? About 30 or 40 going downhill on Highway 99 around Camp Adair. I'm a weenie and my bike doesn't do speed very well with large loads, which is what I tend to be carrying when I go in that direction.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? No pics I'm afraid

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: I prefer to be honest actually

Most memorable moment on my bike: Riding though the park one day during the monarch migration with butterflies and cherry blossoms swirling around me. So pretty!

Most fun ever had on a bike? Wow, so hard to choose! Any good ride is fun to me!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

    Just joined today...

    Real name: Ann

Where do you live? Oakland, CA

Explanation of your handle: Well, the word biker and one of my initials - not very interesting, is it?

Explanation of your avatar: nothing yet...

Age (general or specific): Started my 40s last July

    Occupation: Programmer, self-employed

Favorite bike: mine - a Specialized Sequoia Elite (I think that's what it is)

What's in your stable? Umm, just the one bike.

Fastest speed on a road bike? 29 mph (alright, I'm a chicken, and all too aware that, when you're on a bike, all the soft parts are on the OUTSIDE!)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Oh, it will be a long while before there's photographic evidence of me in cycling clothes! Let's get another 50 lbs off first (one mile at a time!)

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No comment!

Most memorable moment on my bike: Well, I've found that any moment ON the bike is better than the moments coming OFF the bike (why does it seem to take so LONG to tip over with both feet still clipped in?)

    welcome bikerz, madisongrrl and cyclegiant3

as for bikerz question "why does it seem to take so LONG to tip over with both feet still clipped in?"

that's easy, it's the "toppler effect" similar to the doppler effect. You know how the siren's pitch changes as it moves towards, then away from you? "toppler effect" is that speed slows down when you're falling clipped in.

    toppler effect

Toppler effect - I LOVE it! It's so true - my buddy I was riding with the last time I fell (as she dropped her bike and ran to help untangle me from mine, while I lay at the botton of a gravel-filled ditch) said "That happened so fast!", but it seemed to me to take about half an hour from when I realized I was heading over until I was actually on the ground. Luckily, blood and scars notwithstandiong, all my falls have been from completely stationary positions - embarrasing, but not terribly serious in the long run. And I did feel pretty studly riding the 14 miles back to the car after the last and bloodiest fall! Everyone told me you fall 3 times in your clips before you really get it - me and my knees and hips really hope that's true! I now unclip BOTH feet every time there's even a hint of the need to slow down... I and I don't clip in until I am well under way from a start.

Trek420 - good luck on the up-coming Lifecycle - I have several friends riding and crewing this year - have a great ride - it's an amazing achievement to even sign up and train, much less complete it year after year.
