Thanks RoadRaven. I have learned so much in the short time I have been visiting this board.

KS = Kansas, the state God made to block the headwinds from cyclists in Missouri. Some days the winds are just terrible.

    Carm -
Thanks for bringing back memories for me. I spent (a very hot) 8 days in your state during my 2002 cross-country tour, and I remember the wind. I was lucky though - most days it was coming from the side (sometimes combined with a headwind), and I even had a day of tailwinds! Dumb luck, I guess.

    Real name: Beth
Where do you live? A teeny tiny town in Upstate South Carolina

Explanation of your handle: It’s what my hubby has called me since we dated. It’s like Jethro, from the Beverly Hillbillies, but more feminine.

Explanation of your avatar: it makes me laugh

    Age (general or specific) 40

Occupation: Stay-at-home-mom (the ultimate oxymoron since I’m rarely home)

Favorite bike: My mountain bike. I think it's the prettiest bike in the garage. Plus, it is very faithful and hasn't collapsed under me yet.

What's in your stable? 2004 Trek 4300 (mine), various other Trek products belonging to my hubby, daughter, and son, a really fancy teal and pink huffy (5 year old’s) and two groovy vintage Schwinns from my youth (one even has a banana seat).

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 35 mph on my mountain bike on the road, every time I go down a certain hill near our home. (we live in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains and it’s hilly around here!)

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I’m the photographer of the family, which means there are very few pictures of me, period. I don’t think I have one of me on my bike…may have to work on that!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Driver's License weight...haven't seen that weight in years. But when I renew the license they don't ask, so I don't tell. I can dream, can't I?

Most memorable moment on my bike: Finishing my first 40+ mile road ride Mother’s Day weekend (on my mountain bike)

Most fun ever had on a bike? We took our kids to ride the Virginia Creeper trail last fall. It was 17 miles of downhill coasting through these little bike-friendly towns. It was beautiful and the kids just loved that trip! Our 5 year old sang “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes” for most of the 17 miles she rode in the bike trailer behind her dad.

    Hi Beth!
    Welcome to the board

And thanks folks for clarifying Kansas... mostly I can work out which state is which - but for the life of me couldn't think of any "K" state yesterday apart from Kentucky... LOL, and me loving the Wizard of Oz when I was a kid... shame on me!

Thanks bunches and bunches, but I think you've missed a few of 'em! You can have them all but let us keep the tailwinds...

Hi Denise, I enjoyed reading about your travels through Kansas in the summer. Hot and windy pretty much describes it. I'm originally from Iowa so I'm not familiar with the area you went through. You've inspired me to think about a fun biking trip for my 50th birthday.

Hi SingleTrackMind, I'm not sure what part of MO you're from but we've got 15 - 30 mph winds predicted for Wednesday in the KCMO area.

St. Louis county. I'll be pulling the trailer on the confluence trail (St. Louis to Alton, IL) tomorrow which tends to be terribly windy anyway, something about being on the Missippi I guess, so you just hang on tight to those headwinds for me. I'll take the tails, I was doing 22 mph with baby trailer on the return last I was there and feeling like I was hardly working. Ahhhhh.....

Oh, just realized tomorrow's tuesday! Well, block that wind for me too...

    New girl introducing herself ...

Hi everybody ... poking around in here and figured you all were a knowledgable and happy bunch! I'm new to the forum and thought I'd use this thread as a means of introduction ... I'm looking forward to sucking up all your smarts!

    Real name: Jen

Where do you live? Southern California

Explanation of your handle: Short for The Great Googlie Wooglie, my alter ego

Explanation of your avatar: Pineapple is the symbol of hospitality!

Age (general or specific) eek! Almost 30

Occupation: you know, computers and stuff ...

Favorite bike: My old beach cruiser Beachy. You know, the blue one ... everybody had one ...

What's in your stable? a Trek road bike, a mountain bike, old Beachy, and a new Nirve

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? sheesh .. I guess around 40, but that would have been JUST before I spilled and gave myself concrete implants all down my left side.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? nah, I'm not that interesting

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: No lies, never. They're not worth the trouble.

Most memorable moment on my bike: The finish line of my first century.

Most fun ever had on a bike? When I was a kid I had a yellow bike with a huge banana seat and white streamers. The feeling of being on that bike zipping down the street ... wow, I've never felt like that since.

Welcome Jen! I'm happy but not too knowledgable. I'm a trail and error sort of rider. Not very technical at all

Speaking of banana seats did anyone ever do this: get pedaling fast enough to coast and then put one foot on the seat and the other leg straight out behind, in a sort of ballet swan thing? I ought to dig up the photo of that and post it! I thought I was something else when I could do that.

And hey, anyone remember the swing bikes? Those crazy things were an accident waiting to happen but I loved my cousin's swing bike so much I begged and begged for it until he let me borrow for the summer one year, when he was too busy riding horses to ride the bike. No point letting the bike get dusty! When summer rodeo season was over and he wanted his bike it killed me to give it back.

I'm a little slow in doing this....

    Real name: Melissa

Where do you live? Mustang, Oklahoma (outside OKC)

Explanation of your handle: Nickname my mom gave me when I was little based a comic she read. I don't remember the comic.

Explanation of your avatar: First neat pic I found on google

    Age (general or specific) 24

    Occupation: Buyer/Planner for HP

Favorite bike: I'd have to say my brand spanking new Giant TCR Composite 2

What's in your stable? Giant TCR Composite 2 and Giant OCR 3 (until I can find a new home for it)

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 30 mph about a month ago going downhill in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Reserve. Luckily a buffalo did not cross the road at the time.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? Here's a pic of my new bike. I haven't had a chance for a pic on it yet.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first organized ride, Elves & More Texas Cycling Classic, this past November. Surrounded my all kinds of cyclists and the whole experience was just great.

Most fun ever had on a bike? All those times after work when I think I'd rather sit on the couch and read, but I make myself go ride and I'm so happy I did.

Explanation of your handle: My friend calls me Quail...apparently she formed it out of Allison somehow

Explanation of your avatar: It's a Mile 0 sign my friend got for me in Key West because it looks like my middle name (Mileo)

    Age (general or specific) 21

    Occupation: Student

Favorite bike: My (only) road bike, a Giant OCR 1 WSD

What's in your stable? Giant OCR 1 (silver/pink WSD) and a Giant Rincon for fun MTB rides

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I usually hit 29 or 30 mph on some hills around Ann Arbor

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I'll find one sometime

Most memorable moment on my bike: That's difficult...well, a good one was last week when the boy and I stopped on our freezing 45 miler to buy those chemical foot warmer things in a bait shop in nowhereland, Michigan. Yes, in the middle of May.

Most fun ever had on a bike? Anytime I'm riding and I think about how awesome it is to be able to travel so far on my own power and see so many things that I would miss traveling by car. And, when the moment's right and I speed up a hill past my boyfriend- that's also fun.
