What's in YOUR bag? Messenger bag, saddlebag, bar bag? What do you consider vital, what do you take for fun, for luck?

    Oh, how fun! I'll play.

I commute with a Jansport backpack and this is what it holds/held this morning:

    - repair kit for the bike ie, tubes, pump, patch kit, multi-tool, etc. This all gets stuffed in the right side pocket. (Can't do an under the seat thing, risk of getting it swiped.)
    - left side pocket holds deoderant, face wipes and anti-chaff cream.
    - top pocket has sunglasses in their case, keys, allergy meds, lip goo and an assorted amount of loose change. Oh and my cell phone.
    - front pocket holds work id badge, later holds my RoadID/bike lock key.
    - second pocket holds Palm Pilot, and the parts of my lunch I don't want squished.
    - main pocket holds outfit for the day, including shoes, the parts of lunch that are Rubbermaid-ed and can get squished, and my desk water bottle. I also stuff my Kryptonite lock in here somehow.

This all seems so much and so heavy, but it actually isn't.

Your biggest challenge isn't someone else.
It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells "CAN'T".
But you don't listen. You just push harder.
And then you hear the voice whisper "CAN".
And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.

Hmmm, little saddle bag--spare tube, levers, CO2 cartridges, eye drops, lip balm, bandaids, lanolin wipes (free sample "for breastfeeding moms", but they're great for any chafed parts), great little foldup tool with hex wrenches and two screwdriver tips. Sport beans. Sunscreen stick. Hair thingy. $20 hidden somewhere.

Backpack/Timbuk2: hairbrush, antiperspirant, entire makeup thing (mascara, eye shadow, blush, eye liner, eyebrow pencil--one time I rode to work and forgot to put on any makeup--scary pale ), hair thingies, little first aid kit with everything you can imagine. Gestational age wheel (essential tool for a midwife), pens, reading glasses. If I'm using it to go to work, I'll also throw in wallet, phone, date book, change of clothes, washcloth in a ziplock bag with some Dr. Bonner's soap. Not to forget U-lock and cable. Some sort of treat.

    But no beer.

You can fit quite a few cans of beer in a medium Timbuk2 messenger bag

Right now I have a basket on the back of my bike, and a little pouch on the front.

In the basket -- always -- water. If I'm going to Starbucks, there will be a case with a couple of books and/or my laptop in the basket. Otherwise, proably just water. (My water holder came off and we haven't put it back on yet.)

In the pouch--cellphone, iPod, keys, Burt's Bees lip shimmer. (Papaya color.)

Obviously I don't go far and don't need much!
