He might have been pushing towards a Topeak Road Morph, which is kind of like a combo of a frame pump and floor pump. It's an awesome pump, but kind of big and bulky. There's now a smaller version out, the Mini Morph, but I haven't tried it. I lent my Road Morph to Beta because she was always getting flats during her commute.

A hybrid CO2 + hand pump is what I have for my rides, since I don't do any commuting. It's great. It's the Genuine Innvovations Second Wind IH pump:

You use the hand pump to fill it with enough air to seat the tire, then fill up the rest w/ CO2 - works like a charm. That way you don't waste CO2. If you really wanted to, you could use the hand pump to pump up the tire, but that will take you a LONG time.

The Topeak Road Morph is an awesome pump. I can easily get my tires up to full pressure, and I don't have to deal with empty CO2 cartridges (which hopefully there is a reasonable way to recycle... I cringe to think of people just dumping the empty cartridges).

I bought a little kit that came with 2 CO2 cartridges and repair kit and levers to change a tire. Also carry extra tube. I have a road bike and I have gotten 2 flats and both times I used a CO2 cartridge and it inflated my tire fine. I brought my empties back to LBS and bought some new cartidges to carry. I am not sure if they can be recycled.

    CO@ pumps

The Topeak pump is a great pump! If you would rather use CO2, there are different size cartridges for the type of bike you have... mountain bike, hybrid and road bikes... the different size cartridges will blow up any size tire....just have to make sure that you have the right size... always great to have both!

Nanci - I have a road morph but I find it's too big for me. Can't mount it to my frame, even. I ended up getting a Pocket Rocket and carry CO2 cartridges--all fits nicely in my jersey back pocket with room to spare.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'm still considering various particular brands and models, which led me to google what you carry....

But, others, be warned from my mistake. Be sure to google "pocket rocket pump"... not just "pocket rocket"! (Unless you're interested in some adult entertainment).
