Hey, CC! I am excited to try the Tim Tams! I never thought of bringing cookies to lure cute men. We may be onto something. I know, I'll bring cookies and a bottle of beer. The ones who go for the cookies first will be date-worthy. The ones who want the beer....can have it, since, as we know, I don't drink!

IMHO, nothing wrong with eating cookie dough. It's just fattening. It was also the worst possible dough--a mix in a bag made with margerine and water. You know I was desperate. The rest of the dough is in the frig. I should just make the cookies and take them to work to get it out of my house!

I love armadillos. They manage to be both prehistoric and cute looking at the same time. Fascinating info on their reproduction, Nanci! Are they mammals? Reptiles? I never thought about this before.

So what are Tim Tams? I think Erik probably would have accepted both and dipped the cookies in the beer. We had red wine and dark chocolate in a pool hall on our first date....

Do you use different leg muscles on a road bike than a MTB? Usually the fronts of my quads are sore, but this morning after my first 25 km ride on the roadie, the backs of my legs are aching. Hard to sit down... I like the idea of working more of my legs though - I guess I'll have to alternate on and off road to get a good workout.

Watching the TDF right now. It sucks to live in the west when you want to watch it live... I've decided that when we go to France next summer, I want to ride this section from Bordeaux to Dax (sp) - it's the flatest section in the country. Not exactly what Erik had in mind when he said he wanted to ride parts of the TDF...

I'm working on my laptop and watching the TDF, too. My cell phone just rang and I about jumped out of my skin. I thought it might be the call about the job! Nope - a technician at work asking how to order something. Aargh!

OMG that baby armadillo is the cutest thing ever!!! Wow. I would have had a hard time releasing him/her. It's probably best that I don't work at an animal shelter or wild animal care center. I would get too attached.

So I did my first spin class and weight workout since the whole hospital/clot episode. I definitely will be making a comeback! It was great! I haven't been able to breathe this well for months, which sort of creeps me out. Is it possible I had clots in my lungs that long? Since there is no evidence of a DVT in my leg, maybe it is possible. Scary! All interesting things to discuss when I see the pulmonologist in a couple of weeks.

Oh - and I don't know that I would call it a "wattle". But has he had work done? It looks almost like he had a wattle removal down there. Certainly the body is pretty. As my friend Susie says "I can still look at the menu!"

I just went on a big adventure with my student and a patient who was in the middle of a never-ending study with me, who had to go to radiation therapy four buildings over, who couldn't be transported by regular methods because he had an IV (who'd have imagined that, a hospital pt with an IV) so we had to get him on a van, and stop at the x-ray dept at the other building and take a picture, then take him to therapy, then wait 30 minutes, then take him back out, then four busses passed us up for unknown reasons before one would get us, and the battery on the IV went dead anyway...

The wattle/whatever-it-is is odd. In some shots, it's there and in others you can't see it. The rest of him is fine - I agree. Lise, do you have any secret info on this?

Odd though it may seem, armadillos might someday help cure leprosy. Researchers have found that the core body temperature of the armadillo is low enough to favor the growth of the leprosy-causing bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. While this microorganism has been grown in other types of animal tissue, no animal model had previously been found that regularly contracted the most virulent form of the disease (lepromatous leprosy). Because the bacillus only tends to grow in cooler parts of the body, such as the feet, nose and ears, large amounts of bacteria could not be grown (attempts to grow the microorganism in vitro have not been successful). The armadillo, however, has a lower body temperature than most mammals, resulting in rapid development of the disease following inoculation. Because of the armadillo, scientists have been able to develop a vaccine against leprosy. The nine-banded armadillo has become the principal source of M. leprae in biochemical and immunological research.

Although there has been some concern about humans contracting leprosy from wild armadillos, this is not a common occurrence. My understanding is that most instances of humans contracting leprosy from armadillos involve people who have eaten undercooked armadillo meat. Because of their unique double-twinning, nine-banded armadillos are also studied to learn more about multiple births and other reproductive issues. Some researchers have also explored the possibility of using armadillos in AIDS studies. In the past, the nine-banded armadillo has been used for skin and organ transplant experiments, tests of cancer-causing agents, and experiments on drug metabolism. The fact that one animal produces four identical young has been very helpful to scientists, because no experiment is acceptable without proper controls. Identical animals means that any differences seen between an experimental animal and the control animal are a result of the treatment, and not due to different genetic makeups.

For some reason, I find the word "flaccidum" very amusing. I would change "vinum" to something else but I don't know enough latin....

I don't like wimpy wines either - prefer merlot, cab sauv, shirraz... Guess you guys don't get any of our awesome Okanagan wines down there do you? I love living in wine country... sigh...
