Your biggest challenge isn't someone else.
It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells "CAN'T".
But you don't listen. You just push harder.
And then you hear the voice whisper "CAN".
And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.

I think I'm going to go with the stubby no tie since it says that it fits nicely under helmets, though I like the look of the tie one too. Hmmm, what to do, what to do?!?!Originally Posted by Tiffanie

ok..... i already complained about the check in/registration fiasco..... so i don't need to go there again!
i was REALLY undecided about whether to keep on my long sleeved shirt over my shimmel... knowing i'd have to take it off before too long... but not wanting to be cold at the start... since it got so nice so quickly from the time we got there til time to leave... i opted to not wear the shirt (and not have to carry it the majority of the day!) it was an OK choice! i reapplied sunscreen... but it didn't help... or maybe it did... i wonder how red i would have been with NO sunscreen! ACK!
so we headed out... this route had several retracings of routes.. or circles back to where you were... we rode along the coast... and by some absolutely GORGEOUS beach houses!
hubby was just cruisin' along..... (he originally intended to "make" this be a "fast" century for me... that is until we hit the CROWDED bike paths and all the stop signs/red lights and yet another crowded beach path!)
because of the "out and back"... we met up with tracy and redhot at a stoplight and of course... took advantage of the photo opportunity!
hubby took a picture of us gals
and tracy took a picture of him taking a picture of us....
the first rest stop was at the beginning of one of the bike paths.... here's cutie tracy!
just beyond that.... there were THE COOLEST bathrooms... i wish i'd whipped out my camera... the architecture was just too cool... round little turrets! but alas... only the picture in my mind of that!
we rode along on a crowded (with lots of dogs for me to say "HI, PUPPY!" to! and roller bladers... walkers... runners.... joggers!)... bike/multi use path along the ocean... it was very pretty!
from there... it was onto the streets... but then back onto the bike paths.... a little hairy with the directions there.. cuz we needed to turn on rex street... but it was labled dubbers or somehting like that! but it was ok.... the next bike path had less people... but it was away from the ocean..... then *cue slasher movie music* we were in the slasher movie set area! *shaking and scared*..... continued in next post.....
i've mentioned that this part of the bike path creeped me out during cool breeze... i was not pleased we were riding it for 2 harbors! lol! but i had my night in shining armour.... uhm... errrrrr... night in lycra... to protect me! the pics don't show how creepy it really looks!
once past that part... the rest of the path/paths were gorgeous! some shading.... nice trees.... wide paths... not too many people (and a dirt path along a good portion of it for the people with dogs! and i still said "HI PUPPY!" to all the dogs!)
i decided this club was run by hobbits! lol! the next rest stop was labled lunch stop 1! (then there was a lunch stop 2! so 1st and 2nd lunch... like a hobbit! tee hee!) anyways... the next rest stop was in a nice park.... stayed long enough to grab some grub to stuff in my bag to eat on the road! after some more pretty bike path riding... we were back on the road.... at this point... we lost the 2nd arrow (metric riders) and they were lucky enough to miss the climb by castaic lake! it was pretty though! and not too hot!
hubby got the camera from me... and rode ahead a bit to the rest stop at the top to snap a couple of pics of me climbing up!
this is somewhere along the way... after the top of castaic climb....
we rode through/past rincon... and some other pretty areas.... the 2nd lunch stop was also in a nice park... at that point i realized that we were making a 25 mile loop and coming back to that same part... for another 2nd lunch! lol! we had a sandwich... stayed a bit too long cuz my legs were screaming when i got back on the bike.... headed toward santa barbara... there was a rider.. yes... one of "us".... the ambulance and fire truck and cops were already there helping him! (apparently he broke a leg)....
the next part of the ride after climbing around a bit in summerland (spelling?) was in residential santa barbara... stop signs every few feet.... (we did pass a house with a wedding going on... well.. the after or before if it.. not the ceremony... the groomsmen and bride were out there and i yelled "congratulations!") LOTS of stop lights in downtown santa barbara.... this was NOT going to be a fast century by ANY means! but it was very pretty! and fun having hubby riding along! then it was time to hit the beach bike trails again... more slow going... but very pretty!
part 3 in next post.....
we were getting near the pier.....
we left the beach area... and headed back to lunch stop 2.... left there and headed "home!" along the 101 for a bit... then old pch... very pretty!
OH... the coolest thing... we're riding along and pass a recumbent rider and hubby says: "hey that's ron" and quickly hollars "hey ron"... it WAS ron! he turned around and we chatted a bit... he was doing the workers ride of the grand tour.. AND attemtping (NOT attempting.... i told him he WOULD do it!) his first triple! yes... 300 miles in one day! he was at mile 132 and looked awesome... but i digress!
we continued along pld PCH....
it was back inland some once we hit ventura.... we were following the arrows (the route slip was tiny... and orange... and hard to read...) and almost headed back out again when we took a wrong turn using the arrows from that morning (were back at the rex/dubbers road! lol!) got back on track.... and kept heading back... helped a guy along the way... he needed a co2 cartridge! got back to the harbor... YAY! ate some lunch.... and then headed home.... another century is now history...
this is one... cuz of registration issues and all the stop signs/lights... and the distance for us to travel.. that is probably in the "amtrak" pile.. "been there... done that... not sure we'll do it again".... of course... we'll see what next july brings! i think the metric is probably a nicer course (misses the santa barbara section...) but i can't justify driving over 3 hours for a metric....
it's a ride you can get a group of friends together and just enjoy they day...... enjoy the ride... no hammerfest..... just riding and enjoying the pretty views!
Thanks for sharing all the pics! Looks like it was a beautiful day with lots of sights to see. <<nod nod>>
Sad about the cyclist who broke his leg.Was he hit?
