June 22nd Ride Reports

Commuted, then ran a few errands around town like cashing my closing check from the sale of my house from like 2 weeks ago. So about 25 miles total. Rode my Lemond to work which made me a bit nervous since I lock it up outside the hospital. Had yet another tire incident, so I now have a trifecta so I should be safe for a while (I hope). This time my frame pump wouldn't work so well to put some air in my front tire. So the thing just went flat as I tried to pump it up. Thankfully Fuji Girl came to my rescue and let me use her snazzy pump at her apartment. It was quite humid so I got nice and sweaty. I smell wonderful right now

It's 95 or so in the shade here today, I went 5 blocks out and back to Pet Club for dog treats for faithful mutts obedience class and I'm whooped.

It is hot out there.

But I can hearby attest that at Pet Club they let me just walk my bike in and get my stuff. Since the bike locks were far away, there was no problem.

Skulle bare mangle, as we say in Norwegian. After all the bike IS a pet, and one that doesn't bite, bark, pee on the doorposts, or poop on the floor.

This has been a week to forget. Tonights ride tops it off perfectly. I am cruising up a road with a wonderful tailwind. Since I am being very mindful of traffic on this suburban road with no shoulder, I miss three HUGE rocks in my path. I notice too late, hit them and then hear a dreadful hissing noise. It is only 45 minutes to sundown and about 25 minutes to my house if I ride strong. I know I will have a strong headwind for the last 3-5 miles.

I call my big brother and cut the ride short at 25.1 miles, leaving several miles of a glorious tailwind wasted. To top it off the weather is slightly cool compared to last week, only 90 or so in the afternoon instead of 100. This was to be my longest solo ride other than my metric.

The only positive thing is while I was waiting on my brother I changed a flat on my rear tire for the first time! The bad thing is I couldn't get it over 45 PSI. I am picking up some CO2 tomorrow. No more mini-pump for me!

Amanda, good for you on changing that back tire. That's not easy.

Today was sort of wierdly hot; only 78 deg, but humid and awful for running at 2 PM. I felt really overheated, and only ran 1.73 mi. Cooled off at home, and rode the Veloche Green Hornet to my weekly 2 hr of volleyball with friends. About 4 mi each way. I always ride as fast as I can on the city streets, top speed tonight was 22 mph. I do slow down when I need to for safety. Riding down was warm, but fine. Riding back, the air felt perfect. I love riding at night. No doubt more dangerous, but there's a peacefulness to it, despite the city traffic.

Just my commute today. School is out for the summer, so I didn't get to wave to the crossing guards . But I also didn't have to dodge distracted parents in SUV's.

It was kinda lonely though, buzzing by an empty school. Beautiful weather, nice breeze off the ocean. Riding home at dusk made me realize I really should get some lights, because in the woodsy bit of my commute it gets pretty dark in the evening.

We tried to beat the heat today with a morning outing on the Pioneer Trail above Nevada City. Here she is on her way to pro-status. We followed this up with a yummy lunch in Nevada City and lots of gossip. Hope everyone’s ears were burning.
