Here's my proposed route so far... athough subject to alteration and change due to weather..

    Cedar Grove Park, Tustin Ranch
Lower Peters Canyon to Lemon Heights
Lemon Heights to Skyline (yes we are climbing but its early when its cool)
Skyline to Cowan Heights to Newport Blvd.
    Newport Blvd to Santiago Canyon.
    Santiago to Jamboree
    Jamboree to Portola
Portola to Hick's Haul bike trail
Take the East trail back to Portola
Portola to Jeffrey (need to check status of Jeffrey due to construction)
Jeffrey South (again depends on construction) to San Diego Creek trail
SD creek trail to Back Bay East to PCH
PCH to Santa Ana bike trail
SA bike trail to Orange and then find a way back to Tustin.

I think its about 50 miles. If not we can cruise back up Pioneer and Jamboree to add mileage.

Whoo Hooooo, we got ourselves a route!!! That sounds like a GREAT route Pam! Thanks again for putting it together, it really helps to have someone who knows those roads!

What are the other climbs besides Lemon Heights? (No, I'm not worried, just want to be prepared )

well I was sortof toying with putting in Newport Coast to PCH - would be a good challenge for us up and down. I may do this....

From Jeffrey go to Ridgeline (big climb!!!) to Turtle Rock to Bonita Canyon to Newport Coast (big climb) to PCH to Marguerite to San Miguel (medium climb)
and somehow Back Bay or take PCH to Santa Ana River trail.
Like I said, need to think about it.

Right now the climb is all in lemon Heights, Skyline and Newport Blvd, Santiago and Jamboree.

if we do the 2nd option, would we still start at the same park? It sounds like Nina will need to bring her triple!

You are right, I may need my triple!! That bike overall, is not quite as comfortable or as good a fit as my regular bike with the compact double. Right now, it's sitting on a trainer.

Right now the start is still Cedar Grove and yes Nine may have to bring the triple. But then again it maybe hot and I elect to keep the route flat. Will decide next week by Thurs.

Your biggest challenge isn't someone else.
It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells "CAN'T".
But you don't listen. You just push harder.
And then you hear the voice whisper "CAN".
And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.

    Maybe next time

50 miles, 16-18 mph and only very brief stops is most likely going to be beyond my capacity right now, especially if you factor in the heat. I think I'll stick to my 2, 2.5 hour early morning workouts on the hills and trails around downtown for now -- the only thing unsatisfying about that challenge right now is the lack of company. I'd like to catch up with y'all sometime next fall, when hopefully I'll have built up my endurance and speed a bit more.

I didn't mean to imply the ride would average 16-18 mph. Pam will decide on and set the pace. I just want to make sure I don't slow down the group. In any event, my tentative plans put me on Catalina for that weekend so don't listen to me!!

Who said the pace was 16 - 18 mph (I think Nina may have mention that pace but the hills will slow her down)????? The pace is going to be casual - this is a training ride. The distance will be around 50 miles but will include some hills. I am a slow hill climbing. Most likely I'll be lucky to hit 5 mph.

Anyway, this isn't an event ride. This is a slow training ride meant to get us out on the saddle for at least 4 hours and to do some distance. The plan is to have regular breaks although nothing like the long lunch break we had last ride. I am a firm believer of frequent quick stops and not a few long ones. I like to keep my legs warmed up.

Because there will be alot of climbing, regrouping at the top of hills and bottom of hills will be part of the stops/breaks.

And we will ride to everyone's level as long as you can make around 50 miles. Don't stress out about not keeping up.

My friend Jess (of the OC Rebels) is helping me come up with a nice course. It will include Newport Coast - not a hard hill, just long. If you can do NC, then anything on CB will be easy.

I can only go fast on flats!! My speed on hills is my walking speed. That'll slow down any group!!

see... then you still have something over me.... i'm not fast on hills.... i do get passed by MOST people... however i do occasionally pass a couple of folks...

however... i'm not even fast on downhills or flats! yes... i'm faster going down than up! not saying that! but i still get passed on downhills.. and flats.. forget it... i get passed by the majority of people!

what i have (and have said before) is endurance... so i just keep going (i've gotta find me an energizer bunny gif! lol!)

i was looking at my bikejournal log... and my yearly average for my rides so far is only 13.66! yep... that's it! so see! i told you i was slow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have over 3000 miles... but lots of hours on the bike doing those miles!
