    important recall!

If you already know about this I am sorry! But I just found out and this part is on my bike! I won't get to ride for a week at least. This is for bikes after November 1, 2005 this is a voluntary recall by shamano.
potential hazard-subject 'quick release' skewer could fail or break! This happens while biking!
here is the # cause there is a lot of info on the thing I got in the mail. 1-800-353-4719 or you can go to bike.shimano.com and the contents of the notice can be found there. I am pretty bummed my bike is only 2 months old i have to go back to my old bike. But I would not want to put myself at risk!

    Hey there Brandi
I don't know if thats a ligit website...

I just googled "shimano home page" and the first link was to "shimano.com" and then various versions (eg the european shimano site etc). The link you have posted here didn't show on the first two pages.

I talked to the lads in the house that cycle and they haven't heard anything from the LBS's workers, most of whom they train with...

Thanks for the heads up Brandi, but should get in touch with our local shimano suppliers? Is that what you have done? We have mostly shimano skewers in our wheels - some from the timeframe you have highlighted. I want us to be safe too.

If you enter www.shimano.com, then click on cycling for north america, the page that comes up is http://bike.shimano.com/publish/cont...sac/us/en.html. The recall is listed right on that page. And the announcement includes the part numbers. (I also checked the Europe & Australia pages; the recall shows there too.) So I believe it is the shimano website. (And bike.shimano.com is the start of the web site address for their cycling products.)

I also did a Google search on shimano quick release recall and came up with many bike shops that also announced the recall.

As soon as I got the notice i called my lbs and they knew all about it as well! Thanks for backing me up Denise. It would be scary to think that that pin could just fail. Don't want anyone to get hurt!

Hmmmmm, should I be glad the commuter-mobile is so cheap it doesn't even have shimano skewers?

Everyone, be careful. Don't let this one get away, too dangerous!

Going to take a look at Valentina right now! Very scary, and yes- it does appear to be legit. And why would someone lie about something like that anyway? Some campy nazi out there trying to drag shimano's name through the mud?? heh heh heh

I thnk the skewers are fairly interchangeable, so perhaps you could either swap one out from another bike or ask you LBS for a loaner until the new one comes in. This shouldn't bring you off the bike for a week! There must be a work around, but of course BE SAFE!!

Stupid question but, how can I find out if my skewers are Shimano? My bike is barely a month old...

Your biggest challenge isn't someone else.
It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells "CAN'T".
But you don't listen. You just push harder.
And then you hear the voice whisper "CAN".
And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.

the link to the Shimano site will lead you to drawings and photos of the different recalled skewers. It will also show you how to find the numbers on the hubs that came with the bad skewers.

My QR lever says "Formula" and my hubs have no identifying marks on them. Not shimano.

Cool, thanks Denise - I have a very slow connection speed so thanks for doing the work here... I'll get in touch with LBS's tomorrow (my Monday)

    Thanks again Brandi

I brought my bike in to Performance (where I purchased the bike and Mavic Open Pro wheels w/ Ultegra hubs) when the recall first was announced, and no one had even heard of such a thing. They said that usually their corporate headquarters sends out an announcement, but no one believed me, not even the manager. Until I pulled out a printout of the website.

They exchanged my skewers (front and rear - I insisted. Even though the recall is only for the front QR, I wanted the front and rear to match) with Mavic ones. I'm still waiting for the Ultegra ones to come in.

So if they don't believe you, prepare yourself by printing out the page. That might help.

Hey! I've always preferred Campy. Had problems with my shifter. With Shimano, it would have been "throw it away, get another one." With Campy it was "replace $.50 spring."

    Stem recall?

Caligirl... saw that you mentioned something about a carbon stem recall on Specialized bikes as well. Do you have a link to information on that?
