Little earthquake - 10:38 pm PDT

Did any other Bay Area TE gals just feel that little earthquake?

USGS says it was 3.2 magnitude - 6 km from Moraga. Felt like a nice strong thump here in Oakland. Got both my dogs barking too.

I'll take little earthquakes over the big one anytime. I didn't feel it over here in Albany though.

So that's why dogs were barking. I probably slept through it.

Felt it out here in Concord, although I wasn't sure if it was just a very strong gust of wind or a small quake. It did, briefly, bother the cats too.

Didn't feel it, but I'm probably too far away for that magnitude quake, anyway. Darn. A bigger one I might have felt, since I think I was sitting down at around that time. Have you guys checked out the USGS site lately? Indonesia area has been going nuts with activity. Awesome.

I felt it. It made the cats go nuts for a minute, but they quickly went back to their normal state of fast asleep...

I, too, will take little earthquakes over big ones.

Didn't feel it here in my part of Oakland... of course, since I'm next to a very popular parking lot I never know if it's a quake or the rap music set with the bass on RIDICULOUS! that's shaking my house.

I'm thinking a point-n-shoot EMF device would come in handy.

Whenever "I wanna F*&% you B*#)h and your pig motha too" or whatever is shaking the house, I could just aim and "poof"... dead car.

Any inventors out there??

* don't get me wrong. I like all kinds of music. Just not at a volume where all my dishes are shaking in the cabinets at 11:30 pm.

In light of the recent quakes to find out the likelihood of damage where you are, here's how. Courtesy of one of my Aikido teachers who by day is a mild manered Geology professor

to get the info you gotta look at the maps - it will show a section on which you can approximately locate your house. Anyway, the simplest way for me to give you instructions is to paste in the following from one of my class exercises.

I bet both the places you mention are in the 9 or 10 zone. For comparison, you can also select the1989 eq for whereever you were then and get a comparison.

Procedure:
1. Go to this website: http://www.abag.ca.gov/bayarea/eqmaps/mapsba.html

2. Click on #8220;View Earthquake Hazard Map #8211; byCity#8221;.

3. Scroll down the city list, and select the city where you currently live. Scroll down the fault list and select the N. Hayward Fault. This fault maybe the most likely to have a large earthquake in the near future. Find your street on the resulting map. Print the map. Black and white is fine, printin color if you wish. Put a dot where your house is,and label it (please do not give your address). What intensity of shaking on the Modified Mercalli Scale can you expect whereyou live?

4. On the Web, go to http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/general/ha.../mercalli.html, whichshows the Modified Mercalli Scale. You may also wish to consult the linkto the Modified Mercalli Scale on the "On Shaky Ground" webpage -http://www.abag.ca.gov/bayarea/eqmaps/doc/mmi.html (this is a good idea, butdon't get obsessed by all the types of building materials).

You also can go to this website, find your earthquake (you may have to click on archives) and click on it. It'll show maps, plus a link called "Did you feel it? Tell Us!" where you fill out a questionnaire to describe how you experienced the quake. http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/
