Posted back in Feb 2006 by Slantz on bikejournal as his design plan. It will allow miles to go towards more than one club. The changes have not been implemented yet.
I have pretty much decided on a course of action here:
1) Your rides will count toward all clubs you belong to.
Pros:
1. No more misconceptions about why your individual total in your club is different than your individual stats - I think most people are interested in your total distance (or other cumulative stats) for the whole year, not just the miles you have somehow "chosen" should be associated with that club. My arguement here is that there is no standard by which one chooses to associate those miles (it's subjective), thereby making comparisons within and among clubs very inconsistent. If all rides count to all your clubs, the rules are straightforward and simple.
2. No more reason to sign up for multiple profiles to log your miles to multiple clubs. This is causing problems in the individual stats and would no longer be an issue or temptation. I can then apply a hard rule about only allowing one profile per physical person.
3. Keeping track of these totals will be simpler in the database and the ability to pull club stat information will be streamlined (less processing power to render the club stats page)
4. You will still have the club association field in your journal, so you can pull up reports on each club as desired using the journal filters or enhanced stats. So those who still want to track/view their rides by club can.
2) Clubs will need to designate if they are local or "virtual"/associations. This will allow everyone to choose how they wish to view the club stats - with all clubs included, virtual clubs only, or local clubs only. Multiple views could be saved similar to the journal filters for easy access.
I appreciate everyone's input, but I think this will be the cleanest solution.
Also, my apologies to those who feel the rides should be credited to one club only, but I hope this solution will, in the end, provide more structure to this currently "grey" area. Thanks in advance for your understanding.
PS: This solution will still work if we determine additional changes need to be made to allow club administrators/ride leaders the option to have more control over what constitutes a club ride (ability to exclude certain rides from the club totals) as per maschwab's suggestions - I consider this a separate matter.
