Thom suggests Mountain Bike shorts. They have a little padding on the liner short and an outer short that should cover all.

PS Let him ride in jeans if you can's convince him otherwise. He'll find out really fast why you think he needs shorts.

My son, (age 14), refuses to wear bike shorts because they show his "junk".I was wondering if any of you know of a specific brand of shorts that have an extended pad in the front so that his "junk" won't show. This summer I am counting on him to be my rehab buddy and do some long rides with me...but not in jeans!!!
Even if they are womens shorts I would buy them and just not tell him they are womens....

He needs some baggy mountain bike shorts. All the benefits of a chamois and none of the "junk".I really like mine, and they're much more available for small men.

i am no expert in being a parent but i wanted to give my $0.02 anyway...
why not look for some baggies? at that age all he needs to do is to get more comfortable in his skin...when he gets out there and sees that the magority of riders are wearing lycra maybe he will too. but until baggies may be a good option? my hubby is not fearful of lycra but we always tend to grab a bite or run an errand after a ride so he will bring a pair of shorts to pull over the bike shorts so as not to look like a cycling-geek to the non-cycling world...

something like these are lightweight/easy to carry and i am sure he probably already owns a pair

My 14 year old wears his basketball shorts over his bike shorts. It works.
Hi Karen,
I agree with the mtb suggestions, or buy the underwear liner with pad and wear under regular baggies. That's what my son did, until he went on a 3 week bike trip where they required cycling shorts. He then realized how much more comfortable this was. He was also 14 and it seems like in 1999 he got a lot more heckles than today. So did my husband; once they were sitting on a bench in West Acton and someone screamed out "fags" to them....
My husband goes anywhere in his bike shorts, even when we ate lunch on Martha's Vineyard and he got more stares than me it didn't bother him!

I agree mountain bike shorts. Used to wear them all the time. But now I like the other kind. They feel more supportive then the mountain bike shorts. Fox makes some good one's for guys!
Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

My boyfriend refuses to wear lycra too. We haven't really ridden much together. But he says he'd try riding with me sometimes when I start training to do my MS150. He'll be riding my hybrid. He asked if he could ride in jeans. :-D I figure he can wear gym shorts for a little bit so that he can determin the necessity of padded shorts. Then we'd either get him a pair to wear under some shorts, or one of those padded liners.
I really don't expect that he'll ride a lot with me. But on days he'd like to do longer sections with me, I'd like him to be comfortable.
I was going to chime in with a recomendation for baggies, but I see everyone else beat me to it. I will, however, agree with everyone who thinks exposed lycra is evil, erm, I mean, something for other people.
Can anyone remember the code to put a line through what you've written?

Drink coffee and do stupid things faster with more energy.
Mountain bike shorts or a padded short liner with his basketball or soccer shorts over it.
Just keep pedaling.
Where did the term "junk" come from anyway?![]()
"Only the meek get pinched, the bold survive"
I dunno, but if I were a 14yo boy talking to my mother about why I didn't like bike shorts, I doubt I'd use the real words either...![]()

I have 3 sons, two of whom are grown. When they're about 10, they're really shy, won't swim without a shirt on, blush at words that even sound like they contain sexual references, (sextant, for instance). But after that, it's pretty much open season on common decency. Strutting around in just boxers, showing off their first pit hairs, flexing in their reflection in the windows of the front room, and, oh, the nasty things they do to each other...sheesh.
Maybe my boys are unusually open--they don't have any sisters. "Junk" is one of the more tame references to their almighty that goes on around here.

Thanks Ladies...
I knew I could count on you. I have semi-convinced him to wear lycra with baggy shorts over them...we'll see...
Junk is his term for male genitals. Boys are so much easier to raise until puberty hits![]()
