    How old was the tire? Did it have alot of miles on it? Tires do wear out and should be inspected on a regular basis. Also glass and other road debris can damage a tire/tire sidewall allowing the tube to herniated through and eventually exploded. Had that happen to me on several occasions. Not fun!

    Unless the tire subject has been changed it had les sthat a thousand miles on it.
    Sounds like it was either defective or had suffered a secret trauma.
