OK, I am home. DH did a lot of research before he went to the doctor and decided to have the surgery, which is next Wednesday. It's a young associate of Dr. Driscoll, who is well known around here, and did the surgery on DH's wrist in 2003. Of course they told him 12 week recovery, but, based on what DH has done before, with both the wrists and his cardiac stent surgery, he probably will be on the bike before then. He can definitely walk and do the trainer or stationary bike at the gym, as he doesn't want to be in bad shape for our trip to Portugal.
His bike is still at the Natick fire station, but I don't think there's a lot of damage to it.
Thank God for our friends. They picked him up, brought him to their house, he slept there, brought him to the appt. today, and fed him until I got home. My son could have done it, but he does not live that close.
She Fly, what time is the woman's ride? I don't get done at work until 6 on Tuesdays. There's an AMC ride on Thursdays, that I will do, though.

Won't work - the women's ride starts at 6 on Tuesday.

Twelve weeks is for someone who isn't active. My teammate was back on the trainer the week after he broke his collar bone. He'll know when he is ready. Wish him luck! And I will be in MA Fri pm to Sun AM if you need anything.

Yeah, I think the time they give is a projection of solid union, so it's really up to the patient's pain tolerance and willingness to risk re-injury. Motorcycle racers are back competing sometimes the day after surgery, and almost always before the incision closes.

Hope the surgery goes very smoothly.

This is the first I've seen this, so sorry to read this happened! I've had life-long repercussions from a broken clavicle that wasn't treated properly when I was 13, so glad to hear that he opted for the surgery. Thankfully they are MUCH better at this sort of thing now than they were in 1973 :-)

Surgery went well and the bone is completely back where it should be. We should be out of the hospital soon.

Anesthesia affects DH way differently than me. He's still a little "la-la." He also opted for a nerve block, which is keeping his whole left arm numb until tomorrow. However, he says it feels like a weird thing hanging on his body, and can't use his hand at all right now. Anyway, we've been at home for about an hour or so. He won't be doing much until early Saturday, when he can shower, change the dressing, and start doing one little exercise. That's fine, because right now it's 93 degrees out, and I am happy to stay in the AC. Tomorrow and the 4th are going to be crappy, too, but I will head to the gym early AM, before he's up. I have about 2 hours of work, later in the afternoon, but I am sure he will be free of all of the anesthesia by then.

The nerve block wore off around 8 PM, so he started taking the pain meds... his shoulder looks much better, as does his whole body. It was kind of crooked before. He had a bad night, with pain, but he knows that after the next 24 hours, it will start subsiding. I just got back from the gym, so I suppose I should be nice and make a good breakfast. He usually does that...

Glad to hear the surgery went well and that he is on the mend! I am always amazed at how quickly people can recover - particularly with the surgical fix.
