Do it! You can always repaint it easily. Make sure you prime first!
Mine was plain metal but I had put some sparkle rustoleum on it that died ages ago.

Thanks. I was sick of the old look. Time for a change
And I still will be putting my work pannier on the other side but I do like the fold-away basket on one side of commuting clothing that doesn't fit or for a grocery run or a pop down the street.
