    mens shorts question

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Looking for a pair of shorts for my husband. He is new to cycling & would prefer the baggy type of shorts. We are planning to do a tour this summer so he needs a pair with a good chamois pad. It seems like most of the womens baggy shorts have minimal padding. I told him he could get a pair of lycra & wear under regular shorts but it might be more comfortable to have the regular baggy shorts. I am hoping some of you may have connections in this department and can offer some suggestions. I appreciate any help you can give me.

My DH really likes the Performance Century Gel shorts. They're tight lycra, but are smooth, so I would think they would fit under baggy shorts quite easily...

However, the women's have the same chamois, and I've had some issues with mine (haven't worn them again to verify that they were what caused the problem -- think zebra stripe bruises on the crease between my rear end and legs (if that's descriptive enough ). Not a pretty picture

My hubby just got a pair of these from REI and really likes them. The biggest beef is that the liner is not removable. But otherwise very comfy and lots of pockets for Jelly Bellies and such. He tried on at least 20 pairs (OK, I exaggerate...) but he liked the fit of these the best.

Of course, shorts are personal...if you have an REI nearby, take him down there and run him through the racks.

    My BF really likes these

These have the same chamois but with a detachable liner

They are relatively good value here, but I am not sure about once you add the postage to the States, plus you probably have a lot more choices than we do anyway

I ride primarily with two guys. They both work in bike shops and get to try lots of different products.

Guy #1 wears mostly Pearl Izumi. But his current favorites are a pair of inexpensive Bellwethers. He says that their pad is identical to the one in pricey Nike shorts. He also really likes a pair of higher-end Mt. Borah shorts that a sales rep gave him to test.

Guy #2 wears lots of different brands but on long rides I always see him in Nike shorts.

Another note: I've been told to be wary of baggy riding shorts that come with a loose-fitting chamois. Guy #1 got really chafed with a pair of Zoics because the pad was so loose that it moved around as he pedaled. Ouch.

Oh... and I suggest you take a tub of Assos Chamois Creme. It's wonderful stuff.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to check them out. I saw on the PI sight that the sell a men's liner short that sounded like it had a decent chamois. I am going to check into other liners too. Thanks again.

Yes, PI now makes a liner short with the higher end chamois in them but beware of the hardshell shorts you use over. Hardshell bike shorts are cut longer in back because of the position on the bike and will have the seams strategically placed, especially in the crotch.

As said above, be sure the liner and the short fit right. Guys have more options, but I've never liked the shorts because the shell is always one size smaller than the liner.

Yeah, that bugs me too. I believe I may have ranted about it in other threads from time to time...
