I hate websites that talk to me

Anybody else? Here I am, it's almost 6AM and my house is asleep. This is my time to wake up, see what the world is doing, etc. Click on an interesting website about sciatic pain and suddenly this booming voice comes through, "DO YOU HAVE BACK PAIN?"

    Seriously? I can read.

I know - turn down the speakers. But I still feel like it's an intrusion.

A good script blocker like NoScript, and turning your browser settings to require permission to launch Flash plugins, will protect you from way more problems than noise.

All I have to deal with, if I forget to turn my speakers off, is that gawdawful Windows boot sound when I start up Parallels to run SportTracks.

I know! And I'm still old school. I prefer to READ articles etc. instead of watching a video. I hate it when I click on a link to something and realize that it is a video - unless I purposely did it because I need to see a tutorial or something.

ME TOO! I thought I was the only one in the world that hates videos. Especially when you get 15 seconds of commercials first. I'm totally like you - I just watch you-tubes that I might need to see how something is done. And that is rarely.

Since we're on the subject (and I'm showing my age) I hate icons. What ever happened to English? Is this why our youth is illiterate? Will we be giving SAT's using icons soon?

    I just don't click if it's a video!
I also hate icons because most of the time I don't get what it stands for. The common ones, yes, but I seem to have some kind of learning issue with this. I finally learned the icons for Japenese cars and then when I got a European car, I was flummoxed. The second German car, well, I don't use half of the things in my car because I have no idea what to do. And looking at a pic in the book does not help as I can't remember the symbol unless it's something I use a lot. This is not old age, I've always had no visual memory for meaningless symbols. Give me words!

I had to search for and bookmark an internet page that explains laundry care icons. They are so utterly meaningless and non-intuitive.

Ah, but at least they're universal. I have a top I got in Italy, that came with a label literally four inches long, printed on both sides with care instructions in I don't know how many languages. As uncomfortable as it is, I left it in because it's so funny! That's the alternative to having to look up the less-common icons a few times until we remember them ...

And, sometimes it isn't obvious that a link goes to a video. But with a Flash blocker, I find out before it tries to load.

+1 for me too hating videos that starts when not asked for. Sometimes you happen to read on a page and paf! A video starts somewhere else on that page. Then you "panick" trying to shut it and nothing works. So now I gave up and my sound on my laptop is always at "off". If I need it, I crank it up a notch or more. And those ads that they ad before and are louder than the video itself. My pet peeve. argggh

    Yah, I hate that, too.
As for the laundry icons, DH printed out a chart of those, and taped by the washer/dryier, since he buys a lot of European clothes (many US men's clothes don't come in a size small). However, the icons are so small, as well as the print, that if I don't have my reading glasses on, it's useless. I need to enlarge it!

Because of this discussion, I just learned something new (to me) about the laundry symbols! I never noticed the horizontal bars indicating gentle (2 bars) or permanent press (1 bar).

As for the topic of this thread--I hate all that stuff too. What is it about us? We're not all just old, are we?

I don't think it's being old as much as not being a fan of change. I love to read CNN's website but can't stand that over half of their articles are web clips only.

Change is good when it results in an improvement.
Probably what we dislike is change for its own sake.

Like when someone packages an "educational program" for an electronic device, so instead of being just plain old ineffective pedagogy, it is now high tech ineffective pedagogy.
