    I think time of year matters for kayaking off Kauai. When we were there in February I don't think any kayak tours were being held off the north coast.

    Yes, that's a good point. The waters off the northern part of the island can be incredibly rough (open Pacific!) and they don't do the Napali coast tour during that time. There are other trips though - I think there are some off the east coast actually...so maybe Kapa'a is a good place to stay if you are there in November and want to sea kayak. Kauai is the only island in Hawaii that has a navigable river on it, too...so you can experience that year-round, too.
