blender, sketchup, inkscape where to start and which one

My better half wants a graphics package to draw her patterns (for sewing). I don't have much clue as to which software to use for freeformed line drawings. I've fired up Blender (in Linux) on my big computer but it looks really intimidating with all the functionality and even I'm overwhelmed. not sure if google sketch can do freeformed line drawing, meaning non-geometric curved lines and such.

So what would be a good program for my better half. Need to draw curves, place triangles on the curves, add text to the lines. The program I use are of no use for pattern making.

If you used sketchup or blender or inkscape or something else, like to hear of your experience and your learning curve. How long did it take to do line drawings to your satisfaction. I'm posting the question here rather than some other forums because men think differently. The experience of the users here would be more in line with my partner's experience.

I'm stumped!! Even checked out Amazon for tutorial books for blender, sketchup, and inkscape.

In the past, I've played with gimp but that was for Linux and not on Win7 machine. Meanwhile, I think I'll download inkscape and "go kick the tire a for a while". How scary is sketchup? Blender looked very scary even for me.

Yes I know, bit strange to ask on a cycling web site. Strange too that question is coming from a real geekette who have unbricked her net book and changed its operating system... For a brief period of time, it was fashionable (proof that you were true geek) to have a Hackintosh and I was ever so tempted.

This blog is written by pattern maker who is a leading consultant to both the fashion industry and "design entrepreneurs". She has tons of info (I mean TONS!). Maybe you can find some suggestions there. I assume that CAD is out of the question, and you don't say what type of patterns (clothing, multi size, craft...?)

For now, I've downloaded and installed latest version of inkscape on my win7 computer and on my partners computer. There are lot of good tutorials at inkscape site and elsewhere so I think she'll use that instead. Her patterns are for purses, lunchbags, cases for ipad, android phones, tablets... She used to be a manufacturer until the Chinese imports ruined her industry and her along with it. How does one compete with a bag selling for $10? (wholesale) when you are paying $10/hr and having to pay for insurance, and all the other overhead. So she's back to being a "mom and pop" kind of business. And changing from home and gift industry to a more practical items. Consolation of this is that, I'm not taking vacation time, when I had a job, to do NY gift show at Jarvitz center, nor Atlanta, Dallas, LA gift shows... All the wholesale shows are so sad these days. She has kept several of her machines, walking machines and several Jukis, to her 12 needle embroidery machine its industrial not home machine, to cutters with 12 inch or so tall razor blade, clicker press...

BTW, inkscape doesn't have uninstall... GRRRR!!! At least, I still have over 440G left on my drive.

aha - sounds like she knows what she is about for sure. So many people don't.
Some people have been extremely successful through etsy.
