I read his ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ when I was a teen. Such a wonderful example of politics with the spirit of forgiveness, nurturing and caring. I have followed his other published works and a number of other authors who have written about that time in South Africa and its consequences on participants up to today.

I photographed the La Purisima Mission today. The simplicity of the mission’s structure, furnishings and it’s chapel gave a feeling of peace that I’m sure was akin to what Mr. Mandela also found at times in this earthly realm.

I just find it so remarkable his spirit post-prison despite some torture that he endured while in prison. If we could ever be so psychologically so strong...

I know 2 people who shook his hand:

my eldest niece when she was a high school student. Mandela was indebted to Canada because former PM Mulroney lobbied for his release through the Commonwealth leaders. So Mandela visited Canada several times...including Toronto.

The 2nd person was a young Toronto lawyer who opened Canada's first multi-lingual legal aid clinic in Metro Toronto to serve the Asian-Canadian low income communities. Before cycling advocacy/cycling passion, I was volunteering for several years in the area of race relations and immigrant services in terms of policy, etc. The lawyer was the president of our national organization. We had a board meeting one evening and he came in, just stunned and held up his one hand: "This hand shook Mandela's hand." It was fitting that this lawyer has the honour...he was doing difficult, leading edge legal aid services work.
