No advice on the pedals, but how about asking your SO to follow you rather than the reverse? There are people I absolutely will not draft for love or money, and your SO sounds like one of them ...

I know but . . . as usual a "but" . . . I need to watch for him. I tried to ride in front of him, but it is really hard for me to keep looking back over my shoulder and feel safe. I am so scared something might happen that I want to be behind him. I've looked at all kinds of mirrors for the road bike so I could ride in front. I tried to make a helmet mirror work on my old helmet with no luck. I have a new helmet and I think I can clip a helmet mirror in it so I might try that again. We also bought a mirror that fits in the road bike handlebar where the end plug is. Every time I move I knock it out of focus so that doesn't work either.
