Most shorts should be handwashed and dried flat. It will keep them longer and a good pair of shorts, is worth keeping nice. I started with the Quest model and they aren't half bad. Bibs are great if you're doing very long rides but if you're a beginner, I'd stick with shorts. most women don't like bibs becuase they make bathroom stops very difficult.

And no, the shorts I have are all black. Quick question: For cleaning, can you just throw them in the washer like normal clothes? That's what I've been doing after every ride, but I'm not sure if this is the proper way or not...

Mine go in the washing machine, cold water and hang them to dry. I've been wearing bibs since I was a new cyclist, and LOVE the drop-tail version. That feature makes bathroom stops quick and easy.

The shorts should be as snug as possible to help prevent the risk of chaffing Cost does matter, but of course we all have a budget. I am a fan of the PI Elite series (3-D chamois), and have recently come to love the Sugoui shorts as well.

Ladies, thanks for the replies! I have been hang drying my shorts, so it's good to know that I'm not doing something wrong. Have you heard anything about Canari? I'm guessing they're on the low-end, but for now, that's okay.

I throw all of my cycling gear into the wash, AND into the dryer . I have been doing this for years, and my shorts last just as long as friends who hang to dry. Also, even if you are a beginner, bibs are WAY MORE comfortable than shorts IMO. No binding at the waist, and for those of us who are long-waisted, no sunburn on the small of the back from the jersey riding too high . Yes, bathroom stops can be an ordeal, but it's really not THAT difficult.

I will keep my out for bibs then. I don't usually ride long enough for a bathroom break, so I think I'll be fine for now! If anyone has some bibs (or shorts) that they wouldn't mind parting with, please let me know Happy riding!
