    Today (rest day)

Overslept, so breakfast was a protein shake that I made for yesterday's workout and forgot it at home.
S: 1 boiled egg, 1 slice side pork
L: big salad and a cup of chili
D: citrus carnitas and sauteed swiss chard along with a few almonds and pecans

I just got a chance to check out that rutabaga hash recipe - mmmmm I think I will try that Saturday morning. Any tips on what to look for when I am shopping for rutabagas?

L: salad with ham, grape tomatoes, vinaigrette, an apple
    S: blueberries, almonds, cranberries
D: 2 thin pork chops sauteed in sesame oil with coconut aminos and spicy chili sauce, broccoli and red peppers with sesame seeds

Crankin, what sort of chili sauce are you using? Your dinner sounds really good.

B: bowl of cereal with 1%, glass of protein drink
14.7 mile bike ride on the new bike, some off-road
S: 2 thick slices sourdough with a generous amount of butter (last of the loaf--no point keeping it around!)
D: 3 slices uncured bacon (Kroger consistently carries the Hormel stuff, which isn't bad), 2 small potatoes and the rest of the box of baby spinach cooked in bacon drippings.
S: 5 mini chocolate caramels, green tea latte

It's been a couple years since I last bought them, but you probably don't want the really big ones or the really tiny ones because they're woody. Also avoid the ones with cut marks or cracks.
They do seem to need longer cooking times than other root veg. The only way I've cooked them is roasting them with other not-potato root veggies and onions, then pouring apple cider over the top and letting them cook a little longer. Mmmm. (Rutabaga is now no longer a word.)

Don't take this the wrong way, Paleo people, but: I note the lack of regular potatoes. Why are things like rutabagas that fill the same role as a potato (i.e., a starch reservoir) okay, but not potatoes?

("Potato" and "rutabaga" are no longer words...)

I have no idea how to buy a rutabaga but I must have gotten lucky. I knew not to get really huge ones but other than that, it was a guess! I did the 'hash browns' in small batches, some with bacon fat, others with clarified butter and found that both were good but I got a better browning with the butter.

Owlie - there really isn't a good reason not to eat white potatoes other than their fairly feeble nutritional profile. It's not the starch because sweet potatoes, winter squash, root veggies and a host of other starchy things are fine.

Personally, I try to avoid them simply because I love them so much, I'll overeat them. I have a very unhealthy obsession with white potatoes!

Today was a bleh day for me. I slept awful last night (late night moving and coffee after dinner is a bad combination!) and because I was tired all day, I really didn't care much about my food.

B: leftover sweet potato, jalapeno, sausage hash and a hard boiled egg, clementine, black coffee
L: lara bar, hard boiled egg, clementine (see? useless meal!!)
    S: beef jerkey
D: scrambled eggs topped with salsa and a side of blueberries

Nothing non-compliant but my nutritional profile for the day is lame. Ugh.

You want bad? You should have seen last night's dinner. 2 bowls of cereal followed by a bowl of coconut rice pudding with almonds. (Granted, I came home with a splitting headache and couldn't be bothered...)

I think you're allowed an occasional potato. Just send the rest to me! (I love them, but don't eat them a whole lot because I'm mildly allergic to potato juice (immune systems are stupid!) and can't cut or peel more than a couple at a time.) Oddly enough, most of the things I've read say potatoes have a pretty good nutritional profile--provided you eat the skin or scrape every.last.thing off the inside of it. Too much work for me!

Mmm, the skin is my favorite part!

I suspect that part of the reason they are shunned is that if given the OK, half the paleo population would slice them up and fry them in lard and count that as a veggie!

I fried mine in bacon fat...but it's definitely not a veggie!

Potatoes are members of the nightshade family - which I avoid (which really helps my skin conditions). I will, rarely, have tomato, but I don't like potatoes enough to risk it. Paleo/primal athletes will use them as needed. Thankfully sweet potatoes aren't nightshades

Once in awhile I miss white potato hash browns I used to make, but than than that, no. I haven't eaten white potatoes in about 9 years. I love sweet potatoes, so that's good. I miss brown rice a lot more, and quinoa. I will go back to eating those as the cycling season ramps up.

    1 cookie

OK, the pork carnitas are made and eaten. My take is, that it needs more spice than in the recipe calls for, as well as more lime juice. The author most likely did not live in the southwest! It cooked up pretty much the way it said, and I had the right kind of pan. But, not all the pieces got browned, as I felt it was getting too dry to continue (I was right). Next time, in addition to the spices, I will use even more water than I did, as I added some a long the way, and I will turn the temperature down even more.
And, I would have preferred some steamed corn tortillas and black beans to accompany it, instead of the kale and hearts of palm!
    So, that was my dinner.

B: chicken sausage fried up with sweet potatoes with 2 poached eggs and an orange, coffee
L: club "sandwich" in a wrap of romaine lettuce. I had turkey, ham, 2 slices of uncured bacon, and tomatoes.
S: 3 slices of cheese and carrots

Crankin - I really had to move my meat around to brown it all and some pieces were definitely better than others! And I agree about more lime...I'll try that next time.

B: sauteed chicken apple sausage and TJ's 'healthy 8' diced veggies, black coffee
L: pescatore sauce on zucchini noodles at a local Italian place for my birthday lunch with my group at work
D: unknown. I totally didn't plan anything! We will either do breakfast for dinner or go out...maybe to that same Italian place now that I know they'll do the zucchini noodles thing!

Haha, my advisor likes to joke about "Ohio spices"--salt and pepper. If I make anything out of Cooking Light, I usually have to double the spices, otherwise it doesn't taste of anything.

B: Coffee, slice of pumpkin bread
    L: skipped it
S: 1 beer with advisor. Poor choice. I stayed in the lab for a while after that and read!
D: Chicken with garlic chili sauce and a splash of soy sauce, black rice, broccoli and red bell pepper
    S: blood orange
S: Hot chocolate, just under 4 cookies (they're the kind that are packed in a soft plastic tube rather than a box, so I opened it, and the top two cookies were badly broken, so I ate those too.)
At least I don't leave slime trails.

I didn't have any problems with the water evaporating too quickly - but I had it at a very slow simmer. I also added more lime/lemon juice than the recipe called for - I agree it needs more spices but I still really enjoyed them even if I wasn't so lucky with the browning. It is a keeper!

    Yesterday:

B: scrambled eggs with parsley (surprised to find out that parsley is tasty along with being nutritious), bacon, coffee and cream
L: (not much), 1 boiled egg, orange
    S: 1/2 cup chili
D: sauteed bok choy and watercress, tuna salad
