You might ask them to service the drive-train and cablewires. New wires are cheap. If the drive-train and shifting are optimal, your son will enjoy the riding experience that much more.
I just took her around the block last night and it felt sooo nice and smooth !.. didn't play too much with the gears though but they felt ok. I don't think it will need big maintenance...maybe some adjusting to the brake levers I kinda felt one of them were a bit lose. But def she is going to the LBS ASAP !!!...I might drop her off tomorrow at my lunch break.
