No - not my photos! I would not have survived something like this. I am awed by what people are able to accomplish.

The power of the human body and mind is just amazing. You Aussie ladies should be especially interested in this. Maybe you can explain some of the sights/sites.

Thanks for sharing those amazing photos! I'm an Aussie gal, and was priveleged to travel to the Northern Territory last year where those photos were taken. It's the most spiritual, ancient and amazing place. That cyclist is either incredibly brave or borderline crazy to cycle solo in the NT! My hat off to him...

Amazing photos. The photographer remains hidden until almost 100 photos into it. Wouldn't it make an amazing calendar? Kind of reminds me of Arches NP in Utah. I wonder how he came up with that single-tire trailer thing, and why a single wheel?

Actually these photos are of the Canning Stock route which is in Western Australia. Check out the route here www.wildworks.co.nz/csr/route.php

And yes you must be borderline crazy to do this. For the few travellers that are successful heaps are not and have to be rescued each year and those are the lucky ones. Others unfortunately die and most of these are from overseas because they underestimate the extreme conditions and lack of water that they will encounter.

I told ian about the gent biking the canning stock route and we both agreed that yep he's a bit nuts.....Took a look at our map of Western australia...ummm...what planet was he on???? The canning stock route? Good thing he was prepared or the Royal Flying Doctor Service would have come in handy...

All i can think of are the snakes & other creatures he would have come accross...

Oops! I think it was the Alice Springs Road sign that threw me! The thing that would worry me is the complete isolation, where you don't see anyone for miles and miles. Speaking of extreme conditions, we've just had the hottest year (2005) on record, and New Year's Day in Sydney was a record 44 degrees C. (not sure what that is in F., but mega hot!)

Hey Eva I know what you mean I had to have a closer look to find it was the Canning Stock route. At first I though he might have been riding the Tanami Track in NT.

I got some emails from my friends in NSW telling me about the heat (I hate really hot days so they thought I would be pleased to be away from it all).

For any not so great at converting C to F and back (this would include me who still has to convert back to C to know what to wear) 44 is 111.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot Hot Hot.

Over on the perthmtb board we just had a visitor from the UK that wants to do the canning stock route and looking for advice.

Most of the responses were "WHY"???? There were some logical warnings as well-it takes 2yrs for a 4WD to prepare for it. Also 1500km of corrugated road doesn't sound too nice does it...

'However, someone has suggested he do the Gunbarrel Challenge-($2900 to enter) from laverton (Western aust) to Uluru(ayers rock)....fully supported...

Anyone up to the Gunbarrel??? I wouldn't last in the heat....
