True. I just see very few FS bikes amongst my circle of friends or at local races. In some spots fat bikes almost make the most sense, since we live on a giant sand dune and frequently have snow cover almost 5 months of the year (one friend actually has a Mukluk that she converts to a HT 29er for Summer). We don't really have rocks right in our immediate area. The people who have FS seem to be the ones who do a good deal of traveling to ride outside our close region.

Here's a discussion specific to Michigan on FS bikes. Keep in mind that I'm off work today and just have some time to kill. I have no ax to grind on this issue; really! I just think the MMBA discussion itself is interesting in how many POVs are represented. I like the sentiment that if the bike you have makes you want to ride, then it's the right bike for you.

I do tend to think that 29ers seem like a really good compromise for many to the extent they roll over obstacles better--or at least it's alleged--than a HT 26er. I remind my husband of this every time he starts pining away for a FS bike. Of course, then he gives me the "Well, I'll just get a FS 29er." In reality, he just likes bike. The more the better.

Hijacked! DH's next bike will be full suspension. Any time I ride "O" and the new, unbroken-in trails and tree-rooted down hills I wish I had a FS. NCT is another trail system that's back breaking. No rocks, but definitely lack flow.

Sasha--nice bike! I have a Superfly too!!! She's been a good bike. Mine happens to be a HT. Enjoy the ride!

    Yes; sorry for the hijack!

Sasha, I love the bike. I'm going to have to put Idaho on the bucket list! It's getting longer, not shorter! Argh! Love your blog, too. You live in a gorgeous area!

Yeah, the 26er vs. 29er adds a different angle, for sure (I've only ridden a HT 26er, so I am looking foward to seeing how a HT 29er compares--especially considering it will actually FIT me, heh). If I lived in the UP I'd probably have a totally different experience, too...it's WAY rocky in places up there (I'd forgotten that, until I recently saw photos a friend took at a recent ultra marathon). Their terrain is quite different from what we have on the western side of the lower peninsula. Of course, as long as their Winter season is, I'd probably just get a fat bike and call it good.
