Leakproof/Spillproof mug

Hey all. I am looking for some of your wonderful wisdom again. I have been commuting by bike the past week, but in that week, I have realized 1. a coffee mug I had wouldn't work, 2. the one I first bought was broken, 3. the second one that was "leakproof" in every position blew up all over my workbag yesterday when I wasn't commuting and destroyed my bag. I am tired of things leaking!

I had a mug in college and at the start of grad school that was entirely leakproof. It cost a lot, but lasted YEARS and was super dependable. I left it after teaching a class last year sometime and then could not find it again even just 10 minutes later.

I am open to paying more because I care about being wasteful with both consumer paper and plastic and my money, but I need it to be leakproof. I know I can put one of those mug holders on the front of my bike, but I have a roadie that I also use for road rides alone and wouldn't like to have it on there all the time because I need those hand positions.

Anyone have any ideas?

DH and I each have one. They're going on 5 years old, they've been all over the country with us, and abused in every imaginable fashion. No leaks and stuff stays hot for hours. It also fits in a bottle cage or the Topeak Java Cage.

I'm glad to see that they still make them. Mine is getting pretty dented, and I'm thinking about replacing it.

Contigo makes really nice ones. I've gotten them at costco but I think lots of places carry them. I didn't believe it when a friend showed me how she could put hers in a bag. Ours have been commuting, camping, and even down the Grand Canyon of the Colorado.

I've got a thermos "Backpacker Bottle" - I love, love it. I use it in the middle of winter on training rides. It keeps my tea hot for several hours even if it's in the teens, warm for longer. Zojirushi is making a version of this bottle now too - and as usual with them the design is way cool.

DH bought this for me, and so far, I love it. It's a nice skinny shape, so easier to fit in bags, cup holders, etc.

I have a couple of these I'm parting with (new in box - had too many mugs). If you happen to want details, let me know. I have another one I've used (not for sale) and they are really leakproof (and they keep things hot a LOT time - almost too long!).

I have one of these that works well. I bought it mostly because I wanted a small-sized mug--my occasional purchased coffee of choice is an iced 3x espresso, and that was completely lost in the usual 16 oz ++ mugs, plus I could easily drink way too much coffee and my stomach is less than thrilled about that after awhile. They come in bigger sizes/other colors as well.

It keeps things warm/cool reasonably well (not nearly as well as my steel thermos, but I don't generally like super hot coffee anyway) and I carry it (full of coffee) in a pannier almost everyday....I usually stick it in a big ziplock just in case, but nothing has ever leaked.

I will look through these later when I am done with class and a date I have later haha. So much to think about. I kinda love the backpack bottles from first glance. I used to have an amazing thermos similar to that (with the lid), but I want something to drink directly from this time. I might get one of those later when winter rolls around...

I needed my coffee so badly this morning and my usual spot was closed. I wanted to die!

That's the beauty of the backpacker bottles - open the top and there's a drinking spout- no need for a separate cup. All the security and heat retention of a thermos, but convenient like a travel mug.

I saw a lady with one this morning when I went to get coffee and thought about it. Then, I asked the barista at my fave place if they sold them (they have a lot of stuff an a knowledgeable staff). She said they didn't, but the lady overheard me and asked me why I was interested. I said I was a cyclist and she told me that this is why she bought one for her daughter (who commutes an hour each way every day by bike) and why she takes them on flights because she can keep GOOD coffee cold from after security to landing, pretty much.

She pointed out a natural food store in town that sells them. I need to go there for eggs anyhow, so it might work out. Gotta check 'em out today, I think!
