My son can ride his bike!

This is sort of cycling related, but more I'm just sharing my excitement so thought this was a better place for it.

My son, who is going to turn 5 in late July, rode his bike this weekend! He'd ridden it a few yards at a time last summer, but wiped out in the gravel road and got some road rash so that scared him off for a while. We took the pedals off his bike so he could use it like a balance bike, but then when we were camping this weekend he saw a couple friends riding their bike so he wanted to try it again. We put the pedals back on and off he went!

First thing he asked to do when he woke up the next morning was ride his bike! Same thing with today. I am so excited for him! In a few years he'll be on the road with me, I'm sure.

He learned to wear long pants and long sleeves and his bike gloves to help avoid scrapes. He also informed me yesterday that he wasn't wearing underwear because "when you ride a bike, you don't wear underwear."

Guess we should get him some padded shorts soon, eh?

This is so great! My DS was really slow to ride a bike, since his first time out without training wheels ended with him bloodying a knee. It took him a long time to even let us take the training wheels off (his fine and gross motor skills are not great). Now he's 11 and has his first REAL big guy bike (a Redline Conquest 24 cyclocross bike). His first few rides on that were scary for him, since it is SO much less stable than his earlier bikes and it's easier to make it go really fast. But now he's a little monster on it and loves finding new challenges on his 2 wheels. Our boys are so lucky to have parents who encourage such a healthy and fun activity.
