As for sterility, yes and no. In the uterus, the blood etc is sterile. Once the material leaves the uterus and is in the vagina, it is anything but sterile. The vagina, much like the mouth is filled, and I mean filled, with bacteria and yeast. Battling it out continuously. Yes... I guess the Vagina is populated with some bugs. I have never had a yeast or other infection in my life so for me it's probably just regular flora and not a problem.

I've seen the nifty cup thingies, but I can handle it as described....
