After seeing Crested Butte, I'd recommend driving towards the San Juan Mntns and staying at a dude type ranch. There are a lot of choices, and some that won't break the bank. Also in the vicinity are a lot of national monuments and parks (Hovenweep, Mesa Verde, Colorado Monument - depending on where you stay).

Just my prejudiced opinion, but there is nothing like an old fashioned Fourth of July in New England.

I'll second that, Acadia National Park is a wonderful place for kids. And you could rent bikes and take them on the carriage trails. (No cars). My kids love it.

Thanks girls for the destination tips. They both sound like wonderful places to visit.

If you're seriously considering Maine and Acadia National Park, I spent several days in the park during my two tours last year. Obviously going there with your kids and the thought of going hiking or biking the carriage trails is different than what I did - but maybe some of my wandering might whet your appetite. My June trip was focused on downeast Maine, and while my September trip was mainly on PEI, there were a couple of days in Maine at the end. My journals (including what could be some teaser photos...) are at http://denise2005downeast.crazyguyonabike.com and http://denise2005pei.crazyguyonabike.com. If they bring up any questions - just ask!

    Happy trip planning.
