+1 on trying them on locally if you can. There's a rule of thumb that says more expensive shorts are more comfortable for long rides. It's mostly true for me ($30 shorts...ouch!), but my $130 Castelli shorts don't work nearly as well for me as my $90 Sugoi shorts.

I can't really give any suggestions, because all of my shorts are either no longer made or have changed a bunch since I bought them.
