If anyone is interested, long distance hikers of both genders often go commando to increase ventillation and decrease chafing. Especially males in kilt. That would be a far better show on a windy day than commando cyclist. Sorry to bring that up, but it is Friday.

Thank you, all. You've been a great help. I may or may not be back with more questions. I'll try to convince her to register once she gets more involved with this sport.

    siguradam,

Did you just say "Takk?" Are you Scandinavian of some persuasion? We have some Norwegians on board. Get her registered.

Tusen Takk (hope I'm spelling that right, means "a thousand thanks" or at least I think it does) for asking.

I had my period most of all week last week on my biking holiday, can you believe it?

On the first couple days, I resorted to stuffing up the string on the tampon all the way in so it does not chafe, takes some, erm, diggin to get it out again. The overflow just went into the chamois. They are easy to clean, as stated in other threads it all comes out in the wash. Best to have black shorts (as I have noticed on another occasion).

Always keep in mind that what comes out is basically sterile. Once home, wash with soap right away. Plain soap kills 99% of Bacteria present, the rinsing and drying will remove/kill off what's left, it's safe. Grossness to the max, I only have one pair of long tights and it was too cold to go in shorts, so: I wore the same tights for 6 days, just washing with shampoo every night.

Alpine, Get thee to the diva cup thread!!!

As for sterility, yes and no. In the uterus, the blood etc is sterile. Once the material leaves the uterus and is in the vagina, it is anything but sterile. The vagina, much like the mouth is filled, and I mean filled, with bacteria and yeast. Battling it out continuously. If you're lucky and healthy, the battle is properly matched and you are without symptoms. If one side starts to win, you no longer feel so good. "nuff said.

and once again we are Out of Control!!!

I do like free-petaling tho - bikeless is right - you could tell your fellow female riders you're free-petaling and it sounds like you're talking about your bike! (which I guess in a way you are!)

and sorry about the monitor there Queen!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: "Yeah Baby! What a Ride!"

Yes... I guess the Vagina is populated with some bugs. I have never had a yeast or other infection in my life so for me it's probably just regular flora and not a problem.

I've seen the nifty cup thingies, but I can handle it as described....

    thx anyway

I soak in water, then squeeze and rinse in running water, then soak in "napisan" for about 4 hours - a nappy sanitising solution - then pop through the washing machine as per usual and then dry outside in the wind and sunshine (or, as winter approaches here in the southern hemisphere, the sunshine "goodness" will be replaced with frost "goodness" )

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
    "I will try again tomorrow".

    Lasik and Depo Shot

Just as I have more or less forgotten I ever wore contacts, I have also almost forgotten what it's like to have a period! I can't think of a time when that was a bike-related issue. I must be livin' right!
