Sounds to me like he has something stuck up in there that is causing irritation of the nasal passage. Dogs sneeze all the time, just like we do, but episodic sneezing that is intense and lasts for a while suggests veterinary attention is needed. Know that if you take him to the vet that sedation will likely be necessary. None of my patients have ever enjoyed me shining lights up their noses or poking around in there with a finger or probe (even with lidocaine)!
