    Sneezing Dog?

My dog (beagle) has been sneezing on and off since last evening. He'll sneeze 10-20 times, then he's okay for a couple hours. Then the sneezing starts again. He's sneezing now. If it continues, I will call the vet on Monday. This happened once before, a few months ago, when he bumped his nose into something outside, but it was over after a couple hours. Has anyone else run into this with their dogs? A new allergy maybe? No new carpeting, furniture, etc. No change in diet. He's almost 12 years old, and has not been kenneled, to dog parks, etc. so I don't think he would have picked something up.

Is there any nasal discharge, fever, lethargy? Have you checked to see if anything obstructing the dog's nasal passages?

Sounds to me like he has something stuck up in there that is causing irritation of the nasal passage. Dogs sneeze all the time, just like we do, but episodic sneezing that is intense and lasts for a while suggests veterinary attention is needed. Know that if you take him to the vet that sedation will likely be necessary. None of my patients have ever enjoyed me shining lights up their noses or poking around in there with a finger or probe (even with lidocaine)!

Westtexas is a Vet so if she says see the doctor I would. My pups (and sometimes my kitty) sneeze almost daily but it is rarely more than one or two. Good luck with the little guy, poor baby!

I am happy to report that Spencer The Beagle has not had any sneezing episodes today at all. I did notice last evening that going out into the cold seemed to trigger an episode. The temperature seemed about the same today (upper 20s), but it did not bother him. He's getting up there in age, so to be on the safe side, I will get him in for a check. Thank you all for your concern and input.

Good news (I think). Had "sneezy" to the vet earlier this week and everything seems to be fine. Vet listened to heart and lungs, checked glands, tonsils, ears, etc. Could not find anything that would have caused the episodes. Additionally, he has not had any more episodes since Saturday. For now it remains a mystery, but thanks to your alerts, if it occurs again I will not hesitate to get him in to see the vet right away.
